    bt_test_user

    Are there any ramifications behind using bt_test_user@domain rather than supplieduser@domain,

    Reason being is that the supplied PPPoE username and password are failing miserably i.e. the profile on the line is currently 2000kbps and i'm getting a download of 17kbps and lots of timing out.

    It is very variable though, every few hours it will be back to normal and zipping along nicely, then it will fall back to the floor again.

    However, if i use bt_test_user@domain with a blanked password it just runs along smoothly, including youtube, which has been dire for me for months, whereas now it is happy as larry...

    Service Selecton Barringlinks your ADSL account to a prticular line ID (and that line ID is linked to your telephone number - the line ID is the physical ID - IIRC a number and ADSL service are 'logical' or virtual' IDs) so throttling could be applied to either. However I would have thought it would be to the line because it could be circumvented by using the bt_test_user login.

    The login is quite complex and involves a radius authentication server which (again IIRC) determines who the ISP is and other service parameters.

    TAKTAK - maybe the intermittent QOS is something you should take up with the ISP?

    (BTW - there is no technical reason why SSB has to be inplace - it was done at the request of the ISPs when ADSL Broadband was introduced. Without it you could log into your own ISP at any ADSL enabled line - just as you could with dial-up modems)

    The difficulty i have is that the ISP is Sky, but the product is Sky connect, with which they supplied the router with the User and Password hardcoded into the FW.

    However, upon receipt of the router it would lock-up every hour or so due to the flaky FW Sky had lumbered it with, so after i pulled the credentials out of it, i flashed it to Netgears official FW (after receiving another router which did exactly the same), which obviously removed Skys ability to push out updates to the unit etc, and removes the Sky test button that they ask you to hit when you phone them...

    Which i'm fairly sure will be in contravention of their T&C's...

    Hmm - I suppose you could try and blag another one out of them - or just change ISPs - unless you are locked into a long contract.
