Cisco Catalyst 3750G-24TS - Any good?

I've given it a good googling, but I've given up trying to find any reviews for all the shopping site spam..

    Anybody used one at all?

looks like a decent review of the switch here. don't know if it's the exact model though.

What do you want it to do?

It's an enterprise level layer 3 switch. It's good for a distribution or collapsed core if you're stacking them. If you're going to use them as a core switch for several thousand users I'd maybe upgrade to something like a 4507 or a 6509 but those are really expensive.

They're OK as far as low end enterprise kit goes. Nothing overly special and the one I had (which got returned) baluked when it was asked to do some simple EIGRP.

There's a few cheap on evilbay, that's all - I was looking for a good switch to stash in the loft to form the core of my home network

They're massive overkill for home use, but if the price is right and you know how to configure Cisco kit (ignore the web interface - it's awful) then you may as well.

As to pennies, how abouts a brand new 48 Port 3com 10/100 switch with dual GbE uplinks (don't have many things GbE equipped atm, so its not worth the extra expense) for £1.04.*

    Yup, Evilbay it was

*OK so there was £15 p&p, but £16.04 for a £230 switch - bargain tbh!

Catalysts are designed to be shoved in a server room so they're quite noisy bits of kit, usually with a high pitched noise from the fan(s). I wouldn't want one within ear shot.

It's where the BT master socket and hence where the ADSL router lives, and where all the cables from all over the house converge, so there's not really anywhere better for it to go..

It should be okay as long as there's enough airflow

Besides, nothing wrong with a good bit of overkill

Yeah, they're cheap at the moment ~£3, it's not the end of the world otherwise, but I've had issues with office level netgear switches going pop, and I've not been impressed with linksys gear..

There were a couple of small HP procurves kicking about before

Re: Cisco Catalyst 3750G-24TS - Any good?

I hade to dump my Cisco gear and have a 48 port gigabit Dell switch with SFP that just sits on my shelf in the home server room unusued... why? Noise! They are very noisy and it was annoying.

That Dell switch is stunning as well

That's also an advantage of it all being in the loft - you can't hear it!

I can't see you actually getting one for £3!

There is something potentially wrong with overkill in this case - if you don't know how to configure them then you'll end up with worse performance from a badly configured Catalyst than an un-tweaked ProCurve 1810 (for example).

Well, no obviously they won't stay at £3 - they're up to £10 - 20 at the moment, but it might be possible to get one for under £100 - we'll see.

As for overkill issues - there is such a thing as a factory reset, and learning
