Business email service..that allows EXE files

    Hi,

I'm after a recommendation of an email supplier, for a company with 25 email users.

The hosting company they were using went bust last week, and so I moved them over to google apps - a great move I thought..until the director of said company started kicking up a stink because google (rightly, and sensibly) don't allow you to send .exe files in an email. Stupid I know but...Le'Sigh.

He won't accept workarounds (renaming the file for example), and this is a sticking point for him..so i'm left with migrating yet again. Oh the joy (even with only 25 accounts its a pita).

Can anyone recommend a large, very reliable (and preferably UK based, but thats not a necessity) company who can offer the equivalent of google apps email? So that means:

    0) Ability to send/receive exe attachments without raring/renaming!
    1) POP/IMAP Access
    2) SMTP relaying
    3) Good webmail..better than your bog standard squirrelmail/mailenable stuff
    4) Reasonable mailbox size - at least 500mb, 1gb+ preferred
    5) Custom domain name support (don't require sub domain support)
    6) Web administration
    7) Excellent track record - i'm not prepared to switch to another small hosting provider again..going to move them to a company that has been around for a long time and will be for the foreseeable.
    8) Anti spam included

Any suggestions? Most of the reliable companies block exe attachments..as i'd hope and expect. There must be some left that don't though. Not too worried about cost although i'd like to keep it down, as when we get to the £50/month territory it would be easier for me to setup a VDS and do it myself for them!

    www.simplyms.com

Hosted Exchange server, this is what I use.

edit: nope, Outlook Web Access blocks .exe's, I presume the full Outlook does the same thing.

I take it you are the IT person in the company? Have you explained in a very simple clear manner that allow EXEs to fly through your network willy-nilly is a huge risk. It could take down the business for weeks!

Funkstar - yes it does, however you can set it up to bypass these checks if you host exchange yourself (not an option here due to licencing), or in the outlook client itself.

Singh - I am not part of the company but more a contractor when they have IT issues (work as a software developer in an unrelated company for a living). It's been explained many times how silly it is but the customer gets what the customer wants at the end of they day. I'm still hopeful that it can be explained how silly it is, especially as google apps is really really nice for the end users..and free! I need other options though for the worst case.

Just had a chat with matt from simplyms.com - no joy, they filter on all of their services.

    Thanks for suggestions so far

they will probably be filtered on the other end anyway!

Zip them up in a passworded zip file then send them

    Indeed.

And if this is for internal use, they shouldn't be emailing files around like that, what is wrong with storing them on their network shares?

Re: Business email service..that allows EXE files

It's for internal use - they do have an internal fileserver which is used in one office, but they don't have access to that from outside the company network. Yes they could be setup to use a VPN etc but it is not an option for now.

Re: Business email service..that allows EXE files

Agreed on the network share tbh or if you need a bit more flexibility, FTP server? Not to expensive for the size I'm guessing you'd need.

Even if you find one that allows .exe's surely you'll have no end of trouble with individual email clients and security software, almost all of which freak at the sight of an exe in an email? Pretty sure FTP/share would be better for security too.

Re: Business email service..that allows EXE files

I appreciate all the suggestions to alternatives to email - but tbh the issue at the heart of this is an old man who won't change his ways, and is refusing to even consider a very simple workaround like renaming a file before emailing it.

They have been able to send exe's for the past 3 years with the previous system and didn't have any issues with security etc, and I am just after an easy life with this, I don't want to spend much time on it. If it comes to it I may just have to tell them to get a VDS setup and run it that way but its not ideal.

using email as file storage - that's pretty shocking. I'd do some searching to find a suitable online based file storage , but I fear I'd be wasting my time
