    Active line cable toners

I have a HUGE mess of cables that needs to be arranged but before i do that I need to work out where they all go to and from. For this i will need to be able to tone the cable without actually taking the service offline.

Does anyone here have any experience with this kind of kit?

Here's a sample of what is out there ( not exactly the same as I was thinking about but pretty close). Basic concept is to apply a tone to a cable pr with a sender then use a amp tone receiver to search for the tone . Reciever usually has a metal probe and where the tone is loudest if you 'short' the pair the tone will 'cut out'.

Tone generators are a solution but the lower value products eat batteries. Also, if the enviroment is noisy, such as a server room, it can be difficult to hear the tone. You could still have problems - how do you attach the signal generator without disconnection?

Generally, if it is a patching cabinet type mess, a weekend teardown and rebuild is often the best option. Note, as the cables become fewer, the task gets easier.

Just seen your other post. Still advise the out of hours work. For the VoIP devices, downtime is likely to be less than say 5 minutes per connection. Users are usually comfortable with that, especially out of hours.
