Please everyone send a comment to Gadget show UK

These guys have been trying this for ages and require our help. All we do is head over to the Gadget Show website then run a simple speedtest on the line, whatever results we get we send off to their show. Hopefully if everyone does this ISP's will listen and advertise the correct 'available' speeds in the future!

This is for UK only and will be sent to Ofcom

    The link is:

    http://fwd.five.tv/adv/broadbandspeedtest

However I'd advise against filling in the poll - it's a very bad question: you can only choose between saying your connection is faster than expected, or slower than expected. Since no-one is going to be receiving rates faster than their broadband cap this seems an inherently biased poll. There's no option for 'same speed as I expected'.

They're also effectively promoting bandwidth over latency, which isn't something gamers would want!

Re: Please everyone send a comment to Gadget show UK

i am all for them gettin us better products but this confuses me the term up to if you for a job and the ad says earn up to 20k i dont presume i'll get 20k straight off the bat. Every provider i have tried or considered it says up to 8mb/16mb/20mb DEPENDANT on your line distance from exchange etc.

Then usually you put in a phone number and it says you should get 15mb on your line (thats with my current isp) And my speed ranges from 12mb absolute lowest during peak times and 17mb highest sunday mornings and late night.

I just dont understand the confusion up to is pretty clear and what other option are there Betweeen 0 and 16mb join ..... for unknown speeds

I do think the advertising of speeds could be better (or just education of customers in general could be better) especially wrt to factors that influence speed and so on, but the industry isn't going to pay any attention if things like this poll claim to properly represent customer opinion, and worse, it's going to make customers feel worse about their connections than they need to.

I've no real issue with 'upto' advertising, is it just me?

I thought this thread was going to be about asking them to split their prize fund up rather than give it all to one person, that gets my goat about the show! (issues regarding hyperactive presenters & overpriced gadgets aside)

i have no real issue with advertising "up to" provided, there are some people who actually get the top speeds, and its genuine as to why its up to, like line distance, not trafic shaping

I'm the same, I don't have a problem with it.

However, I do think there needs to be something in there that allows for the difference between the two technologies, ADSL and cable. cable will always sync at the advertised speed, but then you have contention and Virgin's network to contend with.

I don't know what the answer is. Education perhaps?

I have to admit, I prefer traffic shaping to an (often unwritten) cap.

Can't what the Gadget show do help our matters though? At least if everyone keeps aggravating Ofcom they will just have to tell all the ISP's enough is enough

People think they might receive say 16mb when in real life all there getting is 4mb, which really annoys me because there paying for that extra speed. This is my grip in that the ISP providers are making mountains of money based on the fact we are too gullible to accept what they give us .

I think we should be paying for what we actually get

But are you actually paying for the bandwidth? That certainly used to be the case, where you would pay for 512kb/sec, 1mb/sec or 2mb/sec. Then when it moved to ADSLMax they changed it to charging for a particular amount of data transferred rather than the bandwidth available. So no matter what your connection speed, you pay the same.

Now, I guess if you are to move up to a ADSL2+ product and pay a premium, but don't see the benefit from it, as in you don't get am improvement over ADSLMax, then you should be able to pay for the ADSLMax connection or be moved back to that product free of charge.

A great illustration of this point is Zen:
    http://www.zen.co.uk/business/broadb...broadband.aspx

Notice that their three packages all offer "up to 20Mbps" so if you buy the top package, and only get 4mb, how can you say you are being ripped off? It's clear you are paying for the potential download volume, not the bandwidth.

However, to counter this, if you sign up to Be and their medium or top package, and only manage to get 4mb then you should be able to drop down to Value without any hastle. However I do believe there are probably other benefits of the medium and top packages that you might want to pay the extra for even if you are not getting the headline bandwidth.

    There you go, problem solved.

Anyone with a pass in GCSE maths can find out their possible speed going on their line length information.

Re: Please everyone send a comment to Gadget show UK

As others have said I can't see it getting much better than it is now, you can't expect ISPs to keep a real-time database of the attenuation of every line in the country which would be about the only accurate way of determining true speed and even then customising TV ads to everyone would be a bit tricky. ATM most ISPs will give you a probable speed based on line length and other speeds in your area. In terms of advertising, how do you want them to say it, "up to 20Mbps" covers it pretty well, and if people are too lazy to do the research themselves then it's their own problem, not the ISP's. The technology behind ADSL2+ does support up to 24Mbps so I think it's very fair to say up to 20Mbps.
The speed test does seem fairly accurate though, unlike lots of others which consistently report your speed at about 1Mbps which probably contributes to this whole issue in the first place...
