Any one explain to me how my Vigor 2710 router works please ?

Hi i bought this router as I would like to attach my external hard drives to the USb ports on the router and share the data around my home.

I have attached my external drive via USB, but I am now confused how I can view that data from a PC in my bedroom, which connects to the router via Wifi.

How do I view these files as well, do I need to long in to the router via 192.168.1.1 or something ?

    Thanks so much !!!

My router info can be seen here http://www.draytek.co.uk/products/vigor2710.html

According to that page, that router supports SMB and FTP out of which SMB would probably be the most appropriate. To access it, type in the start menu (or in IE if your on Win XP) "\\192.168.1.1\" without quotes and press enter. The rest should be self-explanatory but I would recommend setting a decent password which can probably be done via the web interface (where you configure everything else).

Well it says this so am guessing I should be able to view and transfer files across my network

"The USB port can be used to connect a compatible USB printer to so that PCs on your network (wireless or wired) can all share access to that printer. If you want NAS (Network Attached Storage) you can connect a USB memory stick or USB hard drive to store files for everyone on your LAN or remote users to access by FTP or Windows file sharing."

Have attached a USB memory stick to the router and it seems to read it from looking in the router menu but doesnt seem a way to display whats on there and to be able to copy and paste etc to the PC I am on at the minute.

You don't do any of this through the routers web configuration page, you do it through Windows networking.

On Vista or Windows 7 in Explorer go into Network and it should search for and find the share on the router as a NAS device.

I was hoping to transfer my blueray movies from PC to external hard drive via WIfi these files are around 16GB it says its gonna take around 22 hours! lol, am guessing WIfi speeds are still rubbish. How much faster would it be if I was to transfer the files via ethernet cable ? is it much faster than Wifi ?

Re: Any one explain to me how my Vigor 2710 router works please ?

It's never going to be amazingly fast as the router is only 100mbit as opposed to gigabit.

The most you will get over ethernet is about 10MB/sec. I can get about 70MB/sec on my gigabit network at home.

Connect the drive directly to your PC, that will be the quickest way to transfer data

That router has a 100Mb/s switch so it would take approx 25 minutes assuming wire-speed throughput.

What happens if you type \\192.168.1.1 into your windows explorer bar?
