Draytek Vigor 2820 series ADSL modem/router

Anyone got one of these and what is it like?

I know its early days but it sounds like the dogs proverbials looking at the specs.

    I want one

Hoping prices will drop a little when the N specification is ratified

My old Draytek 2600We died this week after years of trouble free service. May she RIP (actually the ethernet switch and wireless hub bits stillwork, just can't syn with ADSL)

Having to slum it with a Netgear Super-G

Re: Draytek Vigor 2820 series ADSL modem/router

The 2800 is a great modem/router but the chipset in it appears to have problems with ADSL2+. Basically the chipset was released as an ADSL2 chipset with forwards compatibility to ADSL2+, but the latter never quite worked properly. - That's the story the last time I heard it, anyway.

So the 2820 must have a new chipset, meaning full ADSL2+ glory.

I have a 2910 and it's great. If I decide to move to ADSL again I'll get a 2820 - then, thanks to the fact that the 2820 has both DSL and and a second WAN port - I can swap between cable/ADSL all I like (hell, I could have both).
    PHP Code:
    $s = new signature();
    $s->sarcasm()->intellect()->font('Courier New')->display();

I gotta admit I'm tempted to pick me up a 2820N - currently I have a WAP hanging off one of the ports of my 2800 which is VLANned off from the rest of my network - the virtual WAP feature would be awesome for me. I was toying with getting a 2800N but was struggling to justify the cost - this may well swing it.

Yes its tempting especially with the free Wireless N USB nic that comes with the 2820n. I was actually toying with getting the 2820Vn as I'd like to try out the Voip functions. But I guess its not essential as you could do that from a PC anyway using Skype or similar. Unexplicably though, you don't get the free wirless N nic with the 2820Vn

Also quite like the idea of having a USB port acts a s a printer server as well as place tio attach a 3G modem. I understand with the 2820 you can use both (printer & 3G modem) if you attach a hub and upgrade firmware

I've had the 2820n since late last year. Amazing piece of kit, so many options to play around with. Took a bit of time setting up, mainly because i was rushing and not looking at some of the options properly.

Wi-Fi connection is perfect, have no problems with speed or reliability.

Only problem i've had so far is trying to connect 2 Xbox 360's, only 1 can get online the other is blocked, not been able to solve this yet, but its not urgent anymore.

There's a lot of reports of wireless problems (again) with this draytek router reading round. Your mileage may vary as it depends on the kit you're trying to use with it - i've had problems with mine in the past with various wireless kit it seems to be a theme.

Anyone aware of similarly priced alternatives to the 2820 though?

Re: Draytek Vigor 2820 series ADSL modem/router

Trying to decide whether to give up on my 2800G - simply dump it in the bin...
I have tried it with two ISP's (Cyberware and Zen). Tested over several months in a business environment.

The older 2600+ works fine. With the 2800 I am have a lot of trouble browsing banking websites (HSBC / Barclays), which claim that the page has expired on certain panels. For some redundancy, I would like to have another modem/router on standby.

I have fiddled extensively with the 2800's MTU settings, to no avail. From what I read in this thread, there is a basic problem with the chipset and ADSL2+ ??

I would love some confirmation that I am not the only one in the world struggling with this. Also - what alternatives to the 2800 would you recommend to provide business class security (as the Vigor products seem to do).

    Thanks
    Don

I run a 2800G using Zen as the ISP and it has been pretty much trouble free - only snag I had with one firmware release was that it seemed slow releasing connections to admin pages (logging on would cause it to reboot) but that seems to have been fixed now. I havebn't had to adjust the MTU settings or tweak any of the ADSL parameters. Earlier firmware was verty slow at auto syncing (better to select the protocol type) but that again was fixed early on.

If you haven't upgraded the firmware, it would be worthwhile doing so.

Re: Draytek Vigor 2820 series ADSL modem/router

I am on a few yahoogroups where people have had problems with their 2800's - to the point they've dumped them and gone for something else (usually a Zyxel ADSL modem and a 2910 Ethernet Draytek)

I've not yet played with a 2820 - got none out at clients yet....but initial reports from other people are that they are rock solid (as always!)

Re: Draytek Vigor 2820 series ADSL modem/router

    Hi,

I was looking at a Draytek 2820N to replace my DIR -655, is it worth it as an upgrade, as it is twice as expensive. I wanted an all in one solution to replace my Netgear DG834N > Dlink Dir 655.

From what i hear the modem in the Draytek isnt the best though, the netgear i have uses the same chipset as the DSLAM which is Broadcom so i can good syncs on that.

I really would like stability mixed in with power, i would assume the Draytek has more power than the Dlink DIR-655 and would be rock solid.

Looking around though its hard to know, i have seen one review on the web that said it was an amazing peice of kit for the money but it would seem some people love it and some hate it.

I have managed to solve my problem very simply with the help of George from Draytek.

We have several IP Addresses defined. In Internet Access >> PPPoE / PPPoA, on the right there is an button to define 'WAN IP Aliases' (next to a label IP Addresses from ISP).
One of the options while entering the IP addresses on this page is to 'join NAT IP Pool'. I was advised to switch this off and hey presto! My problems with the banking websites are over.

I also upgraded the firmware. While I was somewhat nervous of doing this and leave myself 'routerless', it worked a treat and everything has been stable now for two days.

Thanks for all your help and comments.

Re: Draytek Vigor 2820 series ADSL modem/router

I have a client that has a Draytec 2920vn and am having the same 'pool ip' address issue - when trying to access banking sites it will time out and not find them.

Many thanks for this thread, as it has provided me with some great background.

What I am really after are the steps to disable the 'pool ip' option on the Draytec - this thread talks about what needed to be done - but not specific steps to achive this action. If they can be provided as a reply to my query - that would be grand.

    Many thanks in advance.

If you are after some tech help with a Draytek swing over to the Draytek forums. Not sure if it staffed by Draytek staff, but there are some really knowledgable people on there that should help.

    http://www.forum.draytek.co.uk/

Or, try contacting SEG (www.seg.co.uk) who are the distributor for Draytek kit in the UK.

We resell Draytek's at work, I also use a 2820 on bethere and have been very happy with it, however for wireless, we use netgear prosafe access points, Draytek's wireless seems to be hit and miss
