Question Just migrated broadband some questions

Just switched broadband providers from Orange to Fast.co.uk as have read much better reviews of them.

Had inital problems with the router not connecting so used my backup router which has connected fine. Only problem is I remember there is a DLM 10 Day testing period where is best not to reset the router so I guess not a good time to fiddle with them?

    2 Email Questions:

1)Have linked to 2 seperate computers up and have succesfully sent emails on both using new smtp server (smtp.fast.co.uk) however it takes about 30 seconds to connect to the SMTP server and then sends the email in about a second. Is there a reason why it is taking a while to connect to the smtp server?

    2) I have an Orange email address and am wondering will it be deleted after our broadband is cancelled with them as I use it alot!? I have had it since we had dialup with them (it ends @fsnet.co.uk - from the old freeserve days) My mum has a tiscali address which she has used from years ago which hasn't been removed so hopefully this will be the same?

Also just checking if these line stats look reasonable:

    Mode: G.DMT
    Type: Fast
    Line Coding: Trellis On
    Status: No Defect

    Downstream Upstream
    Rate (Kbps): 8128 448

    SNR Margin (dB): 10.8 21.0
    Attenuation (dB): 8.0 2.0
    Output Power (dBm): 12.2 7.8

Live about 100m from strange on copper wire above ground.

    Thanks

1 - It doesn't sound normal, but it could just be a badly configures server their end or they may be restricting connections to the SMTP server by the hostname of your connection - crazy if they are (IP address is a much better option). Either way, not much you can do about it but maybe drop them an email and ask?

2 - It'll probably be deleted if you close your account. See if you can convert the account to a PAYG dialup account - that used to work to keep accounts with Freeserve active. It's for this sort of reason that I never use an email address from my ISP.

The stats look fine, you're getting the full sync rate for the MaxDSL product you're on. There's still a bit of SNR to play with so if you we on an ADSL2+ product you could see better sync rates. As your downstream attenuation is nice and low you'd probably see a 20Mbit sync rate on ADSL2+.

I just switched back to my other router and am still getting good speeds and latency. Are these line stats better or worse? I'm trying to work out which router to use. This one has DGTeam 1012 on it:

    ADSL Link Downstream Upstream
Connection Speed 8128 kbps 448 kbps
Line Attenuation 7.0 db 3.0 db
Noise Margin 11.4 db 21.0 db

Re: Just migrated broadband some questions

The second router shows lower attenuation and higher SNR than the first but because you're not on ADSL2+ the differences are irrelevant. Even if you were though the differences would make next to no difference. What you want is low attenuation, high sync rate and high SNR. What happens though is that as your sync rate increases the SNR decreases.

I expect the difference in figures is down to the router chipsets and firmware than any real difference in line stats.
