    high ping+jitter up and down!

Hey all....Thought i would ask before i go and cancel my contract! Basically i've had no end of trouble with my internet these past 2 weeks (yes it really took them this long to fix it) But now that it is "fixed" i have a stupidily unstable ping

It has reached past 1000 at times, and the jitter hits past 600 at times, trying to play games online is....well almost impossible so the line is no good for me. I need a good solid line and wondered, what could cause this?

To start with i narrowed a few things down,

*I'm plugged into the master socket
*It's just me on the line via cable not wireless
*Tried more than just the o2wireless box (a netgear router)

Now also something i noticed today was that the router reports i'm connected at 2.2mb but speedtest reports i'm connecting at 1.5mb? That is an odd one!

Either way is anyone able to shed any light at all on whats going on? It would be appreciated alot! Thanks guys!

Now try it with a wired connection.

That's right, your wireless connection is terrible for a domestic connection.

    To quote mine

    Code:
    C:\Users\splash>tracert www.hexus.net

    Tracing route to www.hexus.net [195.78.94.240]
over a maximum of 30 hops:

      1 <1 ms <1 ms <1 ms 192.168.1.254
      2 * * * Request timed out.
      3 * * * Request timed out.
      4 * * * Request timed out.
      5 23 ms 31 ms 26 ms linx1.pobox.net.uk [195.66.224.95]
      6 140 ms 86 ms 45 ms 195.78.94.240

    Trace complete.

ok, I reread - you're *not* using wireless? In that case you have major internal wiring issues. You're connected direct to your router and getting 81, 99 and 101ms responses? Either the router is at fault (which as you've tried another router should be ruled out) or your network cable is screwed. Or your NIC is goosed, I guess. Whichever way you look at it, your problem is your side of the BT socket.

A long shot perhaps, but if you have a Realtec network adapter in there and received an "updated" driver via Windows Update recently, try rollling back the driver.

I updated this way once, never again.

ok, well i've tryed it on both the pc and the laptop. i've just had the bt box replaced today, it's one of them open reach things. either way, how can my configure of 2 different computers be the problem? is there a way i can start to rule things out?

I've not updated or changed any drivers recently.

Were you using the same network cable to the same port on your router for both machines? If so... can you try a different cable, and how long is it?

Re: high ping+jitter up and down!

If you could post the same tracert from both machines that might help nail the location of the fault. Also if you could confirm that there is no other network infrastructure between the machines and the router (extra switches, powerline networking, kittens etc) that'll help too.

Run the traces from both machines, then swap the network cables between ports (so the 10m cable is in the 2m port and vice versa) too. Only change one thing at a time. If you're still struggling in the morning I'll see where we are, but I'm headed to bed now as I have a long, dull day of training ahead of me in the morning.

Re: high ping+jitter up and down!

Just did anouther one, brand new network cable and brand new adsl cable (ones supplied by o2 with router) and heres the results...

    Tracing route to Hexus.net (195.78.94.240)
    over maximum of 30 hops:

    1 92 ms 98 ms 99 ms wirelessbox (192.168.X.XXX)
    2 * * * Request timed out.
    3 * * * Request timed out.
    4 20 ms 20 ms 19 ms Linx1.pobox.net.uk (195.66.224.95)
    5 19 ms 22 ms 18 ms 195.78.94.240

    Trace complete.

    ""edit""

p.s i've just tryed it again with anouther 2m cable, the 1st line is this,

    1 92 ms 98 ms 99 ms wirelessbox (192.168.X.XXX)

the rest is basically the same

i think you need to see if you can borrow a router from someone to test that. personally, I think your router could be on its way out.
