BT Infinity - anyone got it yet?

BT Infinity is now available in my area (Dunfermline) and I was thinking about getting it as the download speeds are a massive improvement over my current broadband setup. However, the price is, of course, quite steep (£27 pre month exc line rental for the top end package) so before I take the leap, I was wondering if anyone had any experience of it. For a kick off I was surprised that there's a separate modem supplied in addition to the BT hub as I thought that would be an all in one.

    1) It's BT. Terrible customer service.

    2) Their definition of 'unlimited' is somewhat limited.

So long as unlimited is say, double, than the bottom end 40Gb I can live with that. What about the actual BT Infinity network though. Is it much cop? Reliable?

Re: BT Infinity - anyone got it yet?

There's nothing I can't get down my 24Mbit Be line that Infinity could get me all that much quicker. Besides, thus far Be has been exceptionally reliable (practically five nines this year).

But, I can now get Infinity near me. I have a brand new phone line (new cable from the poll) so I wonder how far from the cabinet I am.

In any case I doubt Infinity will be all that good until other companies run VDSL products from the cabinet as well, i.e. it has some competition.

Re: BT Infinity - anyone got it yet?

The reason I'm seriously considering Infinity over my O2 connection is that the download speed is about eight times faster than my current speed so would definitely benefit. It's also 20 notes a month more expensive! I'm dithering...

I've seen some large cabinets being installed on a main road near to where I live, my area isn't even on the list yet so I'm not sure what they're for. I think one says O2 on it, any ideas? Oh and I don't think there are any mobile phone masts nearby either.

300gb fair usage, should be enough I would think.

Can't argue with the customer service comment though, that will be bad i'm sure..i'm still considering it when I move though, end of the year..

i've got my mac code from O2 and applying for BT infinity. Yes it's much more expensive but hey i'm only getting 3.5 mbps here via LLU, so a very good chance at 30mbps is ok by me.

Taken the leap of faith myself. Engineer booked for a couple of weeks time so we'll see how we get on...

Is the BT wireless N box any good?

up from 3.5 to 24mbps happy bunny now. just need new dlan plugs as mine are max 14mbps to my switch which then divides the speed.

well worth the change to FTTC!

From what I've read elsewhere, the most bandwidth-intensive protocols are throttled regardless of your package, or whether or not you've hit the FUP limit - how are you finding BitTorrent and Usenet speeds, if you have a use for such things?

lets hope this drives down virgin media prices and up's the upload speeds.

No I expect they'll invest in aggressive marketing rather than improving their product.

Re: BT Infinity - anyone got it yet?

Its weird im with Sky and get the 16mb pacakge from which I get the full 1600kbps. But upon going to the infinity website - It said I could now get it but the top speed I can hope to acheive is 14MB? :S Something wrong there!

So until BT actually offer an improvement over the competition (bearing in mind I also only pay £10 per month for my Sky package which is unlimited as I can do 600GB a month if I wish) then I wont even contemplate leaving.

Been with BT before - costs more than the rest - is less reliable - Customer service is terrible and they ALWAYS throttle usenet etc whether your over limit or not.
