    Powerline Networking

Ok, having a bit of a problem with my powerline networking setup, it seems that next door is using the same equipement and I periodically end up on their network instead of my own. Is there anything that I can do to ensure I stick to my own network and to prevent them from attaching to mine?

    Re: Powerline Networking

tbh if your powerline network ends up connecting to your neighbours you've got bigger problems than just the networking. It strongly suggests that the two properties are sharing power wiring, which means that some of their electricity may be going on to your meter (and vice versa). The two circuits should be completely separate. What kind of accommodation are you living in?

As to avoiding each other's networks: do the powerline adaptors allow you to control things like IP settings? Because the obvious way would be to change your IP settings to ensure that you're on a different /24 network to them. But that just a general networking thought - I don't actually have any experience of powerline networking...

Er.. well they probably ARE on a common cct in that there will be a common incoming feeder to the properties and the meters won't filter out the powerline signal. It just so happens that the two properties are on the same phase of the distribution system.

That is probably the way to do it - make sure your network is on a different subnet. Or instead of using the class C private network range of 192.168, you could use the class B private network address such as 172.16.0.0 - 172.16.255.255 and use a subnet mask such as 255.255.255.0 to limit the range, or the class A private range 10.0.0.0 again with a limiting subnet.

    Re: Powerline Networking

Some powerline adaptors support a basic type of encryption to avoid this, if supported it should be configurable via the setup/web interface

Each of your plugs should have encryption button, press it and set passwords via web interface.

I can believe you've been running unencrypted network lol

Its like having wireless and configuring no security at all + leaving SSID as default with no password lmao

That'll teach me not to open the box all the way! Just discovered there was an installation CD and 2 ethernet cables hidden away under another compartment that I thought was just packaging....

I run mine with no encryption as I know that the house circuit is separate from next door. There is no need for the encryption if a) you don't live in a flat or b) like me know that your circuit is on a separate circuit to next door.

Seriously - enough of the lol and lmao and any other laughing acronyms after every sentence. You do it all the time. People might take what you say seriously then rather than thinking you are a 14 year old child.

Do you need someone to cheer you up?

Browse through my posts, feel free.

I do admit saying lol on the 1st of this month before you'll have your say... Is that often enough?

Unfortunately he had the answer I needed, which was to password protect the adaptors, that said I agree he comes across as very comdescending in that post
