    Possible VLAN Issue

    Hello,

I've just installed a HP ProCurve 1810G 8 port switch and I'm haing an issue which I think may be VLAN related.

I used to connect my NAS to my Vigor 2820 router and had no problem browsing network shares. Now my NAS is connected to the 1810G I have to enter the IP address manually i.e. \\192.168.1.61.

I've looked on HP's site and it says all the ports on the switch are in a default VLAN. Could this be the issue?

    Cheers

I know it's not a fix per-say, but surely editing the hosts file is the easiest approach here, in terms of time and effort.

    Re: Possible VLAN Issue

It won't be a VLAN problem unless you've specifically put the NAS into a different VLAN and setup routing between the VLAN's. The 1810 itself can't route between them so you'd need something else to do that.

Quite what's causing it, I'm not sure. Did you change any of the network config on the NAS or your PC?

I assume your DNS is set to the IP of the router?

type nslookup in a dos window and post up the results

    Re: Possible VLAN Issue

I agree it is un-likely to be a VLAN issue. If all the ports are still on the same VLAN then it isn't the problem.
I also assume that you aren't running a local DNS server so name resolution is using NetBIOS broadcasts. My guess is that some setting on the switch is blocking the broadcast. However, I've never used one of those switches so I can't give you any hints where to look in its config I'm afraid.

If it really bothers you and you can't fix it (right away) then go with snootyjim's suggestion and add an entry to your hosts file.

    Re: Possible VLAN Issue

Are you still using the router? How exactly is your network wired. Sounds to me like the broadcasts are not being passed correctly.
