    BT Master Socket

My BT Master Socket is old, I'm unable to fit an iplate. I have a twin master socket face plate with no split and it's incompatible for the iplate broadband accelerator. My BT Homehub2.0 goes into the adsl Modem Filter as does my phone and my ADSL filter then goes into the left Phone socket on of the twin master socket face plate. The right Phone socket is now redundant because i no longer have two seperate number landline phones. Do i need to pay for a new Master Socket to replace my old one. I'm aware only BT engineers can replace the original Master Socket for the later BTNTE5A Master Sockets that would allow me to fit the iplate. or even buy a new master socket with the iplate built in? I only know the basics when it comes to master sockets. so i need advice as to the options available to me. I don't have any Phone line extentions, only my router and phone go into my master socket. appreciate simple solutions as im not techincally minded lol.

    Re: BT Master Socket

Well, when i had a guy from BT come to look at my line, he noticed i had an old box and just replaced it there and then, so maybe just giving BT a call might bring results??

You don't appear to indicate whether you're actually having any trouble with your broadband. If you are, then there may be a case for BT to replace the socket for free as it's unfit for purpose. If you aren't having issues, however, it's unlikely they'll do it for free.

    Re: BT Master Socket

Yeah Steve My broadband connection cuts out from time to time im sick of telling BT this and playing on xbox live i get so much lag it becomes unplayable. Ive heard the ring wire/bellwire could be giving me interferance with my connection and it was suggested to me i fit an iplate. im uncertain though if i actually have a ringwire connected because there are only 4 wires behind my master socket, Circuit 1 Black goes to terminal 5 and green goes to terminal 2 and on circuit 2 the white wire goes to terminal 5 and orange goes to terminal 2. so that raises another question is one of those wires a ring wire? maybe that i dont have a ringwire?

I am a bit confused about what socket you have. Perhaps a photo would help?

Secondly, I think you need to establish if you need an iplate, because if you don't then there is no point about worrying about your socket.

The reason for an iplate, is because is *some* houses, there are phone extensions laid out in a certain way, and the ringer wire in the extension acts as a big antenna picking up interference from all over the neighbourhood, and that interference ends up on your line where it impairs adsl performance.

If you don't have extension cabling in your house, then you don't need an iplate.

If you do have extension cabling, then disconnect it all, and plug your modem into your BT socket, as the only device plugged in. If your broadband is significantly faster than before, then then your extension cabling *might* be at fault, in which case you would benefit from an iplate.

That is the same as they charge to install a new phone line, so if you end up taking that route. (Which is probably unnecessary), then just get them to put a new line in, and cancel the old one. That way you get a pristine line from your local cabinet, instead of the old rusty one you probably have at the moment.

    Re: BT Master Socket

Hi Crestomanci, My master socket is LJU4 Dual Socket. I don't have more than 1 phone and i don't have any Phone extentions plugged into my Master Socket. All i have pluged into my Master Socket is my ADSL Filter and from that my router and one phone. Ive done a speed test without my only phone plugged in, made no differance to my speed. So i pressume i don't need an iplate then? If so then i don't know why my Broadband cuts out and xbox live lags so much.

Correct, an iplate will not make any difference.

I would say that either you have a poor quality phone line or a poor quality ISP.

You are likely to have a poor quality line if you live a long way from the exchange, if your street is old. (old phone lines) or on an estate built in the 1980's (cheap rubbish quality BT lines), or if you are in a rural area (less maintenance). One way to test for a poor quality line is to listen for noise on the line. If you dial 17070, then you will get some BT test options. Option 2 (quiet line test) will let you listen for background noise on the line.

As for your ISP, I would no know which ones are good for gaming, so you had best post the name of your ISP, and let others here tell you that you should have chosen a different one

    Re: BT Master Socket

Probably a poor quality line, old street, old Victorian house. be wiser to pay for a new line than a new master socket, Many Thanks for your input chrestomanci.

    Re: BT Master Socket

I'm guessing that as you have a BT Homehub that you're with BT? if that is the case then you should get onto BT Internet (not phone) and make a complaint about the quality of the line and ask for it to be tested. If things are as bad as you say, they should find a fault and fix it for free.

Phone lines only use 1 pair of wires. Everything else is unused.
