    Sky HD and the phone that never rings....

    Hi all,

    i have a slight problem, mainly with my land line.
    the short of it is that when i have my sky HD box connected to my phoneline, i dont recieve any incoming calls - ie the phone doesnt ring.
    The line isnt engaged, and the other person can hear it ringing.
    as soon as i unplug the sky box - it starts to ring.

    i only have 1 phone connected - its a panasonic wireless one with 4 recievers, an alarm (but it only rings out when the alarm is set off, not a constant polling one, and Be ADSL.

    ive spoken to sky and they said its the microfilter (ive tried with and with out the filter) or too high ren for the line (possible, but i cant find any ren ratings for anything)
    plus ive unplugged everything except phone/sky box and the thing still dont ring.

    ps - BT are useless. eventually found out i had a ren of 4 - after i had to explain to india what ren was....
    "you want to know what the rent is on the line?"
    "NO!! R.E.N"

    anyways.... any suggestions? do i need a ren booster? is it a faulty HD box?

    mucho thanking in advance

    so you have microfilter into the BT socket then you have a phone line from the Skybox, alarm and your ADSL?

    Non ringing phones is one of the classic signs of lack of REN. If your microfilter on the master box or an extension? How are the other phone devices wired in? Via an adapter or wired sockets (wired into the back of the master)? Does the phone ring if you unplug the alarm?

    nothing is on the master socket. both sockets are extensions.
    ive unpugged the alarm (and adsl) and still nothing, till i unplugged the sky.
    ill try just unplugging the alarm when i get home.

    ive tried to find the ren rating of the phone, but there is nothing on the base unit, or on the interweb...

    also, while i think about it, i think the adsl is running faster now the sky isnt plugged in... coincidence?

    Re: Sky HD and the phone that never rings....

    How can "nothing" be plug into your master socket if your running things on extensions? How are the extensions plugged in?

    Code:
    M   = Master
    S = Secondary Socket (hard wired)
    E   = Extension cable
    F   = Filter
    T   = Telephone
    Al  = Alarm
    Ad  = Adsl
    Sky = HD Sky

    Ok

    M - S    - S - S
        |      |   |
        F      F   F
       |  |    |   |
       T  Ad   Al  Sky

    Ok

    M - F - Ad
        |
        E - T
        |
        E - Al
        |
        E - Sky

    Fail (notice how the Alarm and Sky box are actually not filtered when you look at the master).

    M - E - F - Ad
              - Tel
        |
        E - Al
        |
        E - Sky

    Please note I have 2 into one adapters are just like extensions, I have infact assumed any extension also still allows connections into the original socket. Showing a length of cable is not really any use in the junctions that are interesting.
    Perhaps you could now draw your wiring in your house? You do the filtering one of two ways you filter every device separately or you filter at the master then all the other sockets are filtered. I think this is where you have a problem.

    Re: Sky HD and the phone that never rings....

    Code:
    M - S1  ----------- S2
          |             |
          F             F
        |   |        |   |
       al  Ad       T  Sky
    so the master socket has nothing physically plugged into it.
    the other sockets are hard wired into the master socket.
    s1 has a microfilter with the adsl and alarm
    s2 has a microfilter, and a splitter with the sky and phone

    is that a bit clearer?

    Re: Sky HD and the phone that never rings....

    Yes it is, and it sounds like it has been done properly (sadly), (I am assuming your filter is plugged in before the spliter). When you said you change the filter, did you change both? or just the one to the adsl?

    i havent actaully changed any filters. ive unplugged the sky/phone filter and put the splitter directly into the socket.
    i dont have a spare filter, just in case one is faulty.

    i have a feeling ill be doing lots of plugging/unplugging tonight.
    ps everything was working fine till the sky got installed.

    if the ren is being overloaded, how easy is it to add a ren booster?

    Re: Sky HD and the phone that never rings....

    the only test you could do is to buy a couple of long extension leads and wire your system up as if its all plug into the front of the master, and filter right on the front of the master as well, at the moment your adsl signal goes up to the next filter as well as down, this can result in harmonics on the cable between the two sockets.

    Re: Sky HD and the phone that never rings....

    You can get a ren booster from maplins or BT. Some say they give problems with ADSL. if it was working before it sounds like you are out of ren. As you get 4 REN, any device over a one would put you over the limit.

    The other alturnatives are, get another line for the alarm/sky.

    Leave the SKY box unplugged most of the time, it only needs it for the EPG updates and PPV. It seems an utter fail that SKY boxes still need to be plugged into a phone line rather than having an ethernet socket.

    Replace the alarm with one which uses a mobile phone (good idea anyway as your phone line can be cut before they break in).

    Re: Sky HD and the phone that never rings....

    im not going to spend another £130 on a new line, since ive just had the currect one installed (ive just bought the house, and been living there for a few months)
    and the alarm was newly fitted.

    ive got the 1tb hd box - which has an ethernet connection, but i dont think its used for anything yet - shame

    thanks for the help oolon, it is very much appreciated

    Don't know if it helps - try double filtering the Sky Box (daisy chain microfilters then Sky).

    Just leave the thing unplugged like most people tend to do? I think Sky say you have to leave it plugged in but it's not that important. Mine hasn't been plugged in for years

    Re: Sky HD and the phone that never rings....

    You only need the sky box plugged in for PPV. EPG is done via satalight, so I suggets you unplug the box, if you had paid 25 quid more you could have had a "no phone line" install.
