ADSL modem/router recommendation?

I'm getting rather excited 'cos after being told for a long time by BT that we'd never get broadband where I live (way out in the sticks) suddenly they've said we'll get it in June this year! Apparently they re-organised their rural exchanges in this area, following which a very industrious and determined lady went door-to-door round all the villages and farms getting people to register.

Anyway, I've now got to decide on a broadband provider, and buy some kit. Can anyone recommend a not-too-expensive ADSL modem/router with wireless capability and built-in firewall? I've looked at the Netgear DG834G, but its close to a hundred quid. I wonder if there's anything else a bit cheaper?

Stay away from netgear, ive had nothing but trouble with mine. Ive RMA'd it 3 times all of them are rubbish. Random freezing, won't accept firmware upgrades, ports opening and closing randomly. Absolute pile of rubbish.

LOL, when i've got a netgear DG834G, my dad's work got a netgear one, Zak33 got the Netgear router, and i love them, easy to configure, easy to allow extra stuff open up.

DHCP server works a treat lovely bit of kit, sorry to hear that you've not had a good time with yours Spazman but i love mine.

I'm pretty partial to the drayket kit , but it isn't cheap.

as for the netgear stuff I like their router but dont like their wireless kit.

I have a Netgear DG814 and it's been fine, very easy to setup and is stable too.

I'd go for an adsl router and a seperate wireless gateway, its gonna be better for upgradability in the long run. You can buy exactly what you want that way without having to compromise on either.

Ditto, we install draytek's all the time at work they never seem to go wrong, but like Moby says they are a bit pricey. I use a Dlink 504 at home I've had it for about 18 months with no problems. . . .

If you're after some REAL fun, and a PROPER router then get yourself an old PC, and a modem, and a copy of Linux (eg ClarkConnect.)

Nothing more satisfying than a home grown router. It's also taught me soooo much about Linux. Hell, I even got a USB Conexant modem working on it (my site has details - it wasn't the easiest job ever.)

I have the ebuyer brand router does the job for me, really easy to setup as well.
