VPN + Firewall solution with Cisco Router

    Hi all,
Having tried all manner of solutions to our internet speed woes at work, we've finally decided to opt for a leased line solution. At the moment, all of our internet needs are handled by a Draytek 2820VN.
I'm aware that Enta provide a Cisco 1841 router - however, having had no previous experience with Cisco kit - I am a little dubious as to how we'll retain VPN and Firewall functionality.
Buying new kit is not necessarily an issue, but I'm just wondering how easy/hard it'll be?
    Thanks very much all!

you may well find yourself needing to pay for some more networking kit to do firewall / NAT / VPN Endpoint - or purpose a server to do the above.

From a budget perspective Have a look at the Watchguard Series of products. Not to tricky to use and relatively inexpensive.

Thanks for the swift reply Moby.
Now I realise that this is going to sound awful, but how exactly would such a product integrate with the Cisco router? My networking knowledge is faiiiiirly ok, although as stated, my experience with separate VPN/Firewall devices and Cisco routers is rather limited (read non-existent). :-(

Re: VPN + Firewall solution with Cisco Router

Many years ago when I had to put in a solution for a client that had a leased line , I knew absolutly SFA about networking ( many would argue I still do )

If you imagine the Ethernet output of the cisco gives you a number of public IP addresses that are completely unfiltered , so thats your lowest level of trust.

you would connect the WAN/Red port of the firewall to the router and the LAN/Green port to your LAN - you would configure a public address from the pool allocated by your ISP to the Router , then any others ( assuming you want your VPN connectino bound to a different IP ) The VPN service of your endpoint would then be configured to listen on that IP. Have I made sense so far or just made it worse?

Re: VPN + Firewall solution with Cisco Router

No, I think I'm still with you so far thanks!
I wasn't sure whether the Ethernet output of the Cisco would be handing out private IPs at this point (and obviously was then concerned how a VPN/Firewall device would be integrated into that mess! :-)).
Most importantly, you've given me hope that I'm not barking up completely the wrong tree, and that I won't get my head ripped off once we get the leased line installed. I imagine it will be easier to actually figure out what's going on once I have all the equipment at my desk, but so far, sounds doable!
And many thanks, once again Moby.

You might need to check with your ISP but from previous experience they would usually be configured to give public IP's out.

Depending on the number of VPNs and If you can get the cash I would get a Cisco 5510 or at a push 5505 if not we have used watchguard devices.
