    Virgin 20mb fibre broadband

I just switched to Virgin after moving homes... I wasn't happy at first because my upload was low (like 0.3mb/s) but now I'm quite happy with my line quality tests

Ping and jitter are great, download is 19mb/s and upload is 0.66mb/s

The upload is still low, but I can't complain about the download and lack of jitter

Aw man don't say that lol

I heard they're releasing 100mb broadband in december this year... I think I will upgrade to that, it's boasting very high upload rates as well... so I'm hoping like 80+mb/s download and at least 5mb/s upload (maybe 10+ would be really surprising to me)...

I'm very much a perfectionist, everything has to be tweaked and poked at until I feel nothing more can be done, so naturally my internet should be the best quality I can afford

12 years and counting here with Blueyonder/Telewest/Virgin. Not a single major issue bar the odd modem death. Speeds always as expected, 20mb line has been solid for years

Yeah it's quite refreshing actually when I download at 2.5 MB per second, it only takes a few seconds to download any major file, and a game takes maybe an hour... I know it's not as good as many other internet connections across Europe but I think it is as good as it gets for home broadband in the UK, they're so far behind with their tech it seems.

I'm mostly happy with Virgin broadband. Last week I was without a connection for about 3 mornings (worked again in the afternoon) due to an upstream fault but then it's not guaranteed 100% uptime or anything. Apart from that it's generally very good, I nearly always get host on Xbox games, nearly always get full speed and get a very low ping. Also the tech support are pretty good provided you get through to an English call centre, I can't comment on the customer services as I've never dealt with them.

Customer service... I called once... the guy sounded so bored and was very unhelpful and sounded extremely relieved when I finally said "whatever there's nothing you can do then, thanks though" lol

You have a higher upload and better ping than I get from Speedtest.net I guess you have the 10mb package... My upload should be higher than yours since I have 20mb... I was practically begging the guy on the phone to fix my upload and he was just silent like "Well there's nothing we can do" but I just don't want to accept that as an answer lol

Yeah VM are slowly rolling out higher upload speeds, doubling it I think. Strangely I don't always get that 1Mbps upload, at times it drops back to 512k.

My upload is so bad, like 0.6mbs according to Speedtest.net

Is that an accurate gauge from speedtest for upload?

Well who gets more than that, then?

Watercooled said "Strangely I don't always get that 1Mbps upload, at times it drops back to 512k."

Am I just confusing Bytes and Bits again or what?

Virgin are in the middle of increasing the upload speed. Think on the 20mb line you will get 1mbps upload in the near future. They won't tell you when it's been done but if you turn the modem and router off in a week or so and then power them back on you may get the upgrade, just keep trying every now and then. A few mates of mine have the upgrade already, still waiting for mine atm but tbh I rarely upload so I don't really notice the upload speed currently.

I think high upload helps with ping/latency for gaming... Does it not?

    Re: Virgin 20mb fibre broadband

As a player probably not but it helps if you're hosting big games, ground war on CoD for example. CoD's excellent (yeah, right) host selection system often picks me as host but boots me out after a while if I have 512k upload but it seems OK with 1 meg.
