Gbps - not Mbps - Please!

    Hi folks,

I've not posted for a while, but I'm on here everyday checking out certain areas! I know youre mostly tech heads and I need some help! So please, if you don't mind,

I recently purchased a network card for my home server as the onboard LAN had started playing up really bad! I determined it to be the LAN on the motherboard, well at least I hoped it was and I was right, so I went and got:

    http://www.intel.com/products/deskto...t-overview.htm

(needed a card there and then and it was only one available!)

I put it in, booted the server up and all was fine, but the link speed was at 100Mbps not the usual 1Gbps I was getting before from the on board LAN. So I went to properties, I checked through the advanced features and set the link speed to 1.0Gbps, clicked OK, even restarted the machine, it didn't work, I was still at 100Mbps!

At this point I thought nothing of it, I got the latest drivers direct from Intel installed, set the speed again and again it didn't work, I still have 100Mbps!

I've just seen an option called Gigabit Master Slave Mode, I tried both options for this, and still no luck! So I am a little lost...

Any ideas how to get from Mbps to Gbps? (OS is Windows Server 2008 R2, I got it through the Dreamspark program)

I have 2 x Netgear GS605 switches (one plugs into the other and one goes into router), 1 x D-Link DIR-655 router.

Now the LED for the port on the switch is showing green which is meant to mean that it's Gigabit capable, I've tried different cables also!

    Appreciate any ideas?

Have you tried rebooting the switches?

Can you connect direct from the gig card in the server to another gigabit device and check throughput there? Also how long are your cable runs?

Re: Gbps - not Mbps - Please!

@ snootyjim - No luck mate, rebooted both switches before and just now, swapped cables around, swapped cables themselves, nothing, no mater what port or what cable I use it comes up Orange which means it's at 10/100Mbps, even shows 100Mbps on server.

@ Splash - Not tried that, will do when I get chance, I need access to the server tonight, but if all ports and different cables on the switch still show 100Mbps, will this make a difference?

I'm a little stumped, the card is PCI, do I have to change something in the BIOS for it to work at full speed?

It's very unlikely that there's anything in the BIOS that will affect this.

Try a different tack - disconnect one switch from everything else, then connect just the server and another gigabit device - still the same, or do you get gigabit speeds then? I've never used the domestic GS switches, but I've a GS105 and a GS108 here that run fine.

My thinking in directly connceting the server to another gigabit machine is to take the switches completely out of the equation - if the above test doesn't result in gigabit speeds and this does then you know you have a problem with your switch(es).

You could also try booting a linux livecd, see if you get gigabit speeds then. If so it *could* be some sort of driver issue, or something wonky in your OS.

Re: Gbps - not Mbps - Please!

Just to throw this in, but i was getting some very shonky speeds transferring files between my desktop to my NAS (both Gigabit connections, via a Gigabit switch which indicated 1000 Mbit speeds). Typically 4 MB/S although sometimes a large file would fail to transfer.

Turned out to be a rubbish driver update on my desktop side. I rolled it back to a previous driver, and suddenly magic again.

As for the OP: This is unlikely to be the case, but could it be old cables (ie a bit damaged or something?)

Sorted it, I probably should of tried this originally lol!

It seems one of the switches is dead! It's served me proud, but I think it probably died a slow death of overheating!

Recently my internet speeds in my room which the switch provides for have been shocking, so I really needed to find the source of my problem, it seems one of the switches was to be blamed! My speeds are back to normal and my card is working a 1.0Gbps now!

So for future reference check your hardware before software!

Also, am I right in thinking it probably went because of overheating? I really do need a 8port switch, so having 2 x 4 port switches was a plus! It's just now I can't provide internet for my brother!

Have you had any issues with the GS108?

    Again, thanks all!

I can't speak for the GS108, but I've had my GS116 for over 3 years and it has run flawlessly.

Bought my Netgear GS605 recently for £30.
Still works well, obviously not their 'pro' range, but as a plug-n-play device it does its job nicely.

None whatsoever, but it sits on my desk so it's not likely to overheat. Been running fine for the best part of 4 years now. I used to have the 16 port variant but the fan was too noisy to have in the living room.

I have a GS108 and a couple of GS105s. The 105s do tend to run hot and on one of mine, although it works fine, the LEDs are very dim - and I can't discover any failing component that I can attribute that too!

Bought the GS108, lifetime warranty was a plus and the build quality compared to the GS605 is fantastic, bit annoyed I had to buy one, but at least it's all sorted out now!
