    Sky Broadband

My friend just signed up for Sky Broadband Unlimited and I'd like to ask your opinion on that ISP. I am partial to O2, and not keen on the traffic management clause on Sky, but I am also a bit out of touch. If it's not too bad / really risky please post as there is a cool off period (I'll link him this thread).

    Re: Sky Broadband

Sky is one of the best there is, especially when you consider value for money. The truly unlimited is a real boon after coming from a traffic managed ISP. Hopefully your friend is not far from the exchange and and has an attenuation in the 20's or low 30's.

    Re: Sky Broadband

Sky boreband is aweful, god aweful.

Just an example how bad it is, we have 20mb, but the best they can pump through the line is 1mb and even if that stays connected, because it has a habit of disconnecting all the time and having insane pings of 2000 or 5000 in games. I find that my 3G wireless stick connection is always better, it stays connected far longer, better ping of around 50 to 250.

Support is aweful, they have a phone line that is manned 247, but the tech team that you need to fix errors close at around 6pm (could be 8pm) so if you lose connection after they closed, you screwed till the morning.

SKY TV is just as bad.

We are currently using Virgin, always had them, never had any real problems and the few we had, they was always available to fix it, you could phone them at any hour and they can do a few things from their end and fix your moden or connection.

Ping is really good, connection is very strong, never disconnects.

    Sky = sucks

I'm not even going to mention their customer support (rude to say the least!)

    Re: Sky Broadband

Been on Sky BB for about 18 months now.
Not a bad ISP, but I wouldn't recommend them unless you were getting a cracking deal from them.

Looking to move myself at the moment, just can't bear having to call Sky to ask for my MAC code.

As long as things dont go wrong sky are great.

They use easynets network which has always been really good.

I`ve been on them for a couple of years now and am a prettty heavy downloader but have never been told to stop.

I get about 2-2.5 meg which is much better than I was getting using bt`s 20cn network.

I had SKY BB in South Wales a few years back and it was excellent.
I then moved back to Cambridgeshire and it was the biggest pile of poo imaginable. Poor speeds, erratic speeds, drop outs, rubbish customer service.

I dropped them like a hot coal and went to O2. Best service round and cheap aswell.

    Re: Sky Broadband

When it comes to questions like this the only variables that tend to be constant are the price and traffic management. On these two points Sky are easily one of the best if not the best.

This my download total from April this year

In May you can see I did some serious downloading. I've never been warned by Sky.

As to customer service, my experience is that I had a problem with my line. It took me 5 minutes to get through to somebody who booked an engineer who came the next day and fixed the errors on my line.

They've even started giving people Dlink routers which have broadcom chipsets (the same as the exchange equipment)
