UKOnline Shutting down, need new ISP.

I'm currently on UKOnline however sky (who own it) are shutting it down in Jan (11th)
    http://www.ukonline.net/sky/status.html

So I'm on the hunt for a new ISP again.
My UKOnline contract was 1mb not the fastest thing, however unlimited download (subject to fair usage traffic shaping, ie high bandwidth uses get stuck together on larger contentions) and was only £10 a month
I've found slower speeds actually help download limits as you're far more aware of how big stuff is and how much you're downloading. eg I never watch 720p youtube clips as it just takes far to long to download, while 360p youtube clips are fine on 1mb, as long as no one else is downloading something big.

Anyway back to the issue at hand, I need a new ISP, I don't want sky tv and anyway their cheap deals also have very small caps
O2 and Orange both do good offers but they are only cheap for customers with contract mobile phones, which I'm not (ether with them or on contract)

Which leaves PlusNet as the main front runner, with ether:
Plusnet Value - £6.49 month, 10GB cap, should be able to get ADSL2+ so speed up to 20mb or 5.5mb if not (I think that's the figure for my location)
    or
Plusnet Extra - £11.49 month, 60gb cap, same speed
Fees charged on both is £5 per 5gb, or fraction of, over cap.
just checked ADSL2+ for my loctaion is Estimated line speed:10Mb
There is also the option for phone line (not sure what's physically involved in that) that's an additional £11.25 per month but with it at certain times traffic does not count towards your cap (midnight-8am)

Just wondering what peoples experience has been of plusNet?
And which option to go for? baring in mind that 3 of us share the connection, although the other two just web browse, I'm the only one who games+ download quite a bit of data in terms of audiobook/radiodownloader and none of us torrent.

Re: UKOnline Shutting down, need new ISP.

I'm with plusnet on their old Your Way Pro tarrif - currently paying £16.49 for 8Mb, 20GB daytime cap + unlimited bandwidth midnight - 8am. The advantage of the Pro is that you get prioritised traffic, so you aren't as heavily shaped / throttled at peak times. Very happy with the service I've had from them over the last > 2 years. Also their bandwidth usage monitoring online is brilliant - let's you show the stroppy 9 year old exactly how much of your monthly bandwidth she consumed watching cbeebies, and why you're therefore limiting her to a couple of shows a day...

Quick edit, just to add that if you get your games off steam going for a package with the unlimited downloads overnight is brilliant. It's a shame you can't schedule downloads with steam, but more than once I've set off some downloads manually at midnight and got up at 8 the next morning to check that they've finished / pause them if not.

    BeValue
    Upto 12mbps down, 1.3mbps up
No throttling or traffic shaping (obviously this excludes problems with overcongestion or any exchange issues, but this will apply to any ISP)
    No unreasonable download limits.
Fair usage applies, but any Be users out there will know that the limit is very very very high (re: 300GB or more per month)
    https://www.bethere.co.uk/web/beportal/bevalue
It is more expensive than you have listed @ £13.79pm

Re: UKOnline Shutting down, need new ISP.

Used Plusnet for a while now and have not had any major issues. Upgraded/changed to the 10Gb recently and lost much longer offlimit times for increases capacity. We're in a non competitive area so are stuck with thier trial price for three months and then £11 odd after that.

Check moneysavingexpert for some tips on whats cheap at the moment.

Windows task scheduler can wake up your PC and shut itself down. I have tried this once and it failed due to a disc error on wake up! The individual compoenets of the schedule (open steam, shut down) worked fine but somehow the HDD never woke up from sleep. Going to tell it not put the HDD to sleep next time I think....

Re: UKOnline Shutting down, need new ISP.

    Thank guys.

@scaryjim, they still do plusnet pro, it gives: 240 minutes of VoIP + static ip + reduced latencies (ie lower contention) + Free usage between midnight-8am without the phoneline. (actually it looks like they are currently offering the Free usage between midnight-8am on all the packages regardless of phone line)
However I've got a question for you, what was the free modem router you got? why are IPS's always so cagey over that detail?

@LuckyNV, looks like a good deal, thanks.

Ideally I'd like something £10 per month max, but they seem short on the ground atm, even if it was a slower connection.

Re: UKOnline Shutting down, need new ISP.

Plusnet are good, got my dad on one of their deals at the moment.

You can usually get some cashback for them, obviously I've got no idea what will be around in January, but it all helps.

I think my dad wound up paying about £5 a month after the cashback.

Can't comment on the router, using a cheap Netgear job.

Arrgh both jim's are on plusnet (here by called JimNet)

I've managed to refind my favourite website for all things ISP
    http://www.ispreview.co.uk
Check out their list of ISP's (about 150 in total) then look at the tiny amount listed on most other places and price comparison sites.
This is a major downside of price comparison sites because most only list the products of places willing to pay the website to list them.

Just trying to dig up details on the new tesco package
    http://www.tescobroadband.com/tesco-...d-package.aspx
up to 20Mb, FUP, £8 + £11 phone line per month.
Their old package apparently wasn't that good but early reports of the new one are good.
(I need to check what BT charges us for line rental)

Didn't get one I'm afraid: I got wires only as I already had a couple of routers kicking around and couldn't face adding another one to the pile

But, If you're short of a router I've got a couple of spares lying around...

Re: UKOnline Shutting down, need new ISP.

No I'm not sort a router, but both the ones I have are getting on a bit now and neather will support ADSL2+ and I'd like to add wireless, save me having to keep unreeling the spare cable when I want to use my netboox on the couch

Arrgh there used to be quite a few good £9.99 per month options around, but now everything has gone over to 8mb max, all the sub £10 options have gone, and the few still left are all very small caps.

the BeValue is currently looking the best but that work out at an extra £45 a year, that a hard drive or new case that I'd not be able to buy or 1/3 to 1/2 of a new graphics card (I don't go over about £125 on gpu's.

EDIT: hey Jim & Jim can I ask you what your rough monthly usage figures are? I'd like to get the JimNet Value package but I'm sure I'd go over that 10gb cap and I'm honestly not sure about the 60gb cap on the JimNet Extra package.

Re: UKOnline Shutting down, need new ISP.

Here's my last three months using the wonderful online usage checker I mentioned previously

    Code:
Billing Period	Paid-for usage	Free usage	Total usage
    24 Oct - 24 Nov	10.24GB 890.48MB 11.13GB
    24 Sep - 24 Oct	10.43GB 1.5GB 11.92GB
    24 Aug - 24 Sep	19.29GB 1.17GB 20.46GB
The big month was when I let the stepdaughter have free reign on iplayer *doh* Otherwise our usage is two of us on plenty of browsing, some streaming (QI and Time Team, mostly ) and some smallish game downloads (when I have large files to download I usually set them away overnight). I don't consider us particularly heavy users, and as you can see we hit 10GB pretty much every month...

Jimnet value usage for me (I 'm glad I didn't call myself ginger jim):-

Billing Period Paid-for usage Free usage Total usage
    29 Oct - 29 Nov 10.52GB 6.47GB 16.99GB
    29 Sep - 29 Oct 7.27GB 3.72GB 10.99GB
    29 Aug - 29 Sep 16.44GB 4.89MB 16.45GB
I asked them to throttle my connection instead of charging me an extra £5/5gb. It ends up slightly faster than dialup.

Re: UKOnline Shutting down, need new ISP.

I was with plusnet for a year..and regretted it a month after signing up with them. I had connection issues for a month (constantly getting dropped) and their support through ought was appauling - it took ages to get through to them on the phones, and then they made me go through all the standard noddy tests (master plug, new filters, cable etc) every single time..before telling me there was nothing they could do.

Had big problems with their traffic shaping too - notably that they (during the time I was with them) completely blocked FTP traffic during 4pm-midnight..they denied this of course but it was amazing how you could be uploading something (uni work usually, or photos to my backup site) and then bang on 4pm it would cut you off. Bang on midnight it came back..o.O Never did any torrenting etc so no idea what they are like with that.

Point being they were pretty terrible in service and support, and that experience has put me off them for life. They may be better now, as companies change, but i'd be wary.

You really do get what you pay for with internet connections, and it's worth the extra money for BeThere. They were a complete opposite to PlusNet - their technical support was really good, they even went as far as logging on to our router to fix an issue with it at one point..much better than the old "replace your filters" mentality of plusnet. Speed and reliability was also great with them, no issues around traffic shaping or bandwidth. The only time I had a real fault was all down to BT mis-wiring our cabinet, so can't complain.

Go with Be, you won't regret it. Don't forget your quidco when you sign up too

Re: UKOnline Shutting down, need new ISP.

Well UKOnline finally sent through my account details to sky, so they could give me my mac code.
Sky actually impressed me buy just handing it over, I was expecting to have to listen to a sales pitch first.

And I've just signed up to Be, decided against Davenet in the end.

I think the call centre is in india, but it all went very smoothly so now just waiting on the ADSL2 router and swap over, should be getting 12mb, well BT estimate is 14mb but I've gone for the value package wich is only 12mb top, however ether way it's one heck of a step up from my current 1mb
Again impressed with BE's lack of sales pitch, asking for just the basic package, the man didn't try to sell me a more expensive package or a phone line or any additional extra's

Call centre is in Bulgaria, never had to call them, I just use the ticket system.

O2 and Orange both do good offers but they are only cheap for customers with contract mobile phones
    Not true fella.
You can get the discount on O2 with a PAYG phone.
