Try a reset? (paperclip/pen with the reset hole on the back?)

You have probably corrupted the main flash ROM, but I think some routers have a backup. Try as Repressor said but try holding it down until you see a flash on the lights or something, it's often like 5 or 10 seconds or something. Failing that you'd probably need to get the ROM manually re-flashed but it would probably be cheaper to buy a new router unless it was fairly expensive. I don't think ROM nukes are covered in most warranties but I could be mistaken.

Try a google search. IIRC I saw a few options to recover a bricked DG834 and were listed very thoroughly. Unfortunately they were all on the dgteam website and they seemed to have shut up shop! The website must have been mirrored and a google search has led me to some leads but I can't open them at work.

I had issues with flashing an old WRT54g after a search I found that you can use a TFTP client to boot it from a rom on your PC then flash it from there.

I think the netgear DG can also do this. I'll have a look now.

    try this for now

I did the same thing on mine ages ago - it's still sitting in a cupboard gathering dust.

If you can solder though, you have options to fix it. With a serial cable and a some capacitors (I robbed mine from an old soundcard), and small chip and a PCB you can create a circuit board that will allow you to reflash over serial cable.

I got all the components together, but never really spent any time trying to build the circuit. The first attempt I tried failed miserably.

You can also jtag it but I could never find any decent details on the procedure.

For reference, archive.org is usually a good place to find copies of old web pages if you know the URL.

If you do manage to get this fixed, open it up and install a heatsink.

Better to do this now before it overheats and commits suicide (like most do)

    Re: Killed Netgear DG834GT?

To expand a little on Jay's post earlier,

The boot loader is usually in a protected area of memory, so unless you arte really unlucky and over-write that, the router should be salvageable. The behaviour you describe sounds as if it is booting to the boot loader, and as others have said, you will need a tftp client to connect to the serial line to allow the boot loader to install the firmware image.

So you need the firmware image, and you need a tftp client for Vista.

If that the boot loader is corrupt (unlikely given the scenario you presented) then the only recourse is to reload it through the JTAG interface - not a trivial task, and one that would require some additional hardware.

    Re: Killed Netgear DG834GT?

rahman2k6 - can you let us know if you manage to get this running again.

I've delt with a number of these where they have been "bricked" (they go for cheap on ebay and take all of 5 mins to fix)

The last one was some what different, i had to rename the firmware file run the updater and with it running (not flashing) rename the firmware back and then flash in order to recover the router (it thought it was a different model and so would not flash with the firmware - part of the updater checks the model version)

Yup, tried that but its not working, I'm not even touchin the reset but but when I power it up after a few secounds it goes into update mode.
See above, the router is in recovery mode, you need to reflash the device.

    Re: Killed Netgear DG834GT?

If it's anything like my situation, the flash tool doesn't see the router anymore to flash the firmware onto, so even though it appears to be in recovery mode you can't progress to flashing the unit.

This is from memory, it's been some months since I looked at this.

    Re: Killed Netgear DG834GT?

See above, i've seen a few where the router thinks it's a different model and the flasher won't flash it because of this.

The solution was to use a different firmware - let it find it then put in the firmware i wanted to use back =) - i'll try and dig the links out for it.

    Re: Killed Netgear DG834GT?

    Cheers, will have a look.

I think it might be quicker for me to solder up the serial port then re-install XP on my netbook or a desktop then have to install 7 again. Not using XP for the flash tool is what knackered my router in the 1st place as I stupidly decided to ignore the instructions!

It's definitely step 7 that the process failes for me - no device shown in the device list.
