    Advice

My current router ( Speedtouch 858) drops connection constantly since i have been using it wirelessy, especially when more than one person uses it. I've tried configuring it, restarting etc. I'm unable to connect to it with a cable now so i see only too options. Buy a new wireless router....belkin?netgear? whats a reliable brand?

Or keep my current router and get a homeplug adaptor. Are these any good? Do they keep a reliable connection when streaming etc?

    Thanks for any advice

    Re: Advice

Wireless routers these days are really cheap/affordable.

I recently bought a TP-Link TD-W8960N ADSL modem-router really good reviews, however I cannot connect it to my O2 LLU broadband.

I believe netgear, linksys are good brands. Draytek is very good but expensive though.

Tp-Link has loads of features and good reviews, but check first whether you can make it work with your provider.

    Re: Advice

Draytek somehow managed to make their 2800G slightly worse than the 2600G. Perhaps they've improved since I got my 2800G a few years ago. They do offer a very good feature set & web UI, though.

Netgear are quite good, but they suffer from the common feature of terrible cheap power supplies and capacitors. Plan for them lasting three years at most, unless you fancy buying a nice branded switch mode PSU for it, and replacing the capacitors with nice Rubycons. I use a DG834GT with replaced caps and a new PSU - 100% reliable for me. The extra bits cost more than the router itself though.

Who is your Internet provider? If it's Be or O2 LLU, then you should get one with a Broadcom DSL chip. Most (all?) Thomson routers have, as do some Netgears.

Most off-the-shelf consumer wireless routers have a historically bad reputation with regards to reliablilty under load. Generally, though, they perform fine for a couple of simultaneous users.

Basically you need to find a router with the features you need, then google for comments about it to guage public opinion. I find Newegg.com very useful for looking through feedback.

Regarding Homeplugs, I don't trust them - they often get very very hot, particularly the cheap ones. My mother uses them but I'll be moving her onto proper external cat5e shortly, as I have to position the upstairs one in front of the fan exhaust to keep it comfortably cool.

This post is mainly full of negatives rather than positive suggestions; sorry

    Re: Advice

Are you using WEP or WPA/2?

If WEP, try switching to WPA2 if your router supports it. WEP is awful.

    Re: Advice

I'd personally recommend the Tenda equipment. Relatively new to the UK market but so competitivly priced its unbeleivable.

Been using the Tenda Wireless-N300 ADSL Modem Router and cant fault the performance and extremely stable!

when you say drop connection do you mean it drops wireless connection or it drops the internet or dsl connection.

Depending on which one it is there are several things you can do.
