    50/100MB virgin modem/routers

which one of these is best as i can upgrade to 50 mb for 25 quid a month but not sure which one i would get or need.

    http://shop.virginmedia.com/broadban...s-routers.html

i have the old Motorola modem that is connected to a d'link Dir615 router and that is also connected to 3 PCs and a PS3 that is on wireless.

would i need one of the new modem/routers or could i upgrade to 50mb with what i have?

You get a new modem when upgrading to 50Mb, they should also provide you with a new router.

I got both, so I wouldn't worry about going out and buying anything just yet, however, I would recommend you do ask them on the phone when you talk to them again (if you do).

    Re: 50/100MB virgin modem/routers

I'm having really bad issues with 20Mb at the moment, I have bad gaming quality and voip is a joke... frequent disconnects and lag, etc...

    High jitter...

Anyways, a second engineer came out and replaced my old Modem with the new SuperHub... I have not noticed any improvement whatsoever... It's a joke.

Ask them if they have checked the quality of the connection in the street cabinet. Last engineer I had out really knew his stuff. Went to the cabinet and brought in an inch length of copper he had cut off as it was black. The connections will degrade over time in the cabinet, when I went to 20mb he said they should have renewed the connections.

Its a good router when you install the open source firmware DDWRT

Well the engineer that came here said "Everything is fine downstairs" and he told me he checked outside, so I'm assuming he checked that cabinet, or what else would he have been referring to, unless he missed something due to his inexperience, or perhaps he didn't check anything outside at all...

I had similar problems too with Virgin, In the end I changed to Be and wished I'd done it sooner!

With mine the speed was always less than 13Mb or just had no connection at all. Eventually, I got one of them to admit they had exceeded the contention ratio in this area and compounded by the fact that we were sharing a connection over copper until it reached the nearest bit of fibre optic over a mile and a half away. All this nonsense about a fibre optic connection from the nearest cabinet - nothing but a sales scam.

Before I ditched them I was also given a new modem which they were sure would solve the problem and of course it did not.

Engineers are hit and miss to be honest (no different to SKY or BT engineers to be honest), although logging into the modems diag. pages would have told him if there were any issues. Personally i'd head over to cableforum.co.uk, make a thread in the internet section and post your modem's diag page (post transmit/receive power levels, downstream and upstream power levels and SNR, make/model of modem - if it's Cisco/WebStar just copy the signal and system pages), use http://root:root@192.168.100.1 to login, as there's plenty of ex/current NTL/Telewest/VM staff so they'll be able to tell you if there is an issue.

jetfire - Both are just a combined modem/router and neither are anything to shout about to be honest.

    Re: 50/100MB virgin modem/routers

If you get the dir 615 router and flash it with dd-wrt firmware you can use (clone) your old mac address in dd-wrt and keep the same ip address (if thats handy for you).
