Adsl to ethernet - Internet gaming

    Hi,

I am currently using wireless for internet gaming, and although the ping is not bad most of the time, the signal sometimes weakens randomly - so I have to regularly adjust the adapter; which does get annoying during gaming sessions, so I am considering wired options.

There is an extended phone socket near my desktop, so my question is that would an adsl -> ethernet cable work if i connected a filter to the telephone port and then the cable from the filter to my desktop.

The cable is this one wwwamazon.co.uk/RJ11-Plug-meter-Cable---TEL-613/dp/B00136UYOC/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1294849336&sr=8-1

Also, I have heard about homeplug/powerline. Do they provide reliable low latency for gaming?

The ethernet cable would need to plug into your router, you can't just plug it into the telephone line.

    No.

Better ("less bad") latency than wireless. For proper gaming, use an ethernet cable from your ADSL router to your PC.

Ok thanks for the advice on the telephone adsl port.

Could you define "less bad" latency, i.e. Is it a reliable and stable connection? Because the latency for wireless when the signal is strong is currently the same as ethernet; but it is unstable so sometimes the signal drops, which causes ~100ms latency increase - which the the problem I am experiencing. I am curious to whether homeplug/powerline can have the same stability and reliability as ethernet or suffers the same signal drop/latency spike problems as wireless.

Powerline (which I use) is very stable. It can vary in performance though: I'm using 200Mbps devices at some distance on a different ring with fairly dodgy wiring, and it sometimes is around 50Mbps, sometimes around 90Mbps. No dropouts, though.

I get a 4ms ping time between my PC and my router, and most of that must be in the adapters, so you'll need to allow for a 2ms increase in latency.

Homeplugs also rely on the two plugs being on the same circuit - if your not sure it is safer to go with ethernet

Wires are normally far more reliable and stable, something has to ether physically or magnetically interfere with the cable to cause connection issues between your pc and the router.

By better "less bad" latency he means the lower the latency the better, latency is basically the wait time for a response.

Think of it like an IM chat with someone, the speed at which you can type is you connection speed, latency would be a pause between you clicking the send button and it actually sending the message.

Latency is one of the things that effects your Ping times, eg on http://www.speedtest.net/ when I ping the London server, I'm getting 28 ping currently on this ethernet connection, on my netbook wireless I get 36 ping

Ping is basically the combined latency between your pc and thing you are pinging, so if you go through lots of network stages they add up, eg when I try to use speedtest to ping the Singapore server I get 332ping

Another thing you have to remember about, when using wireless, is the number of devices connecting, the more devices connecting or transmitting/receiving data the weaker the overall signal can become.

I think I am going to try homeplug; buying from amazon so free returns if my eletrical circuitry is bad
Will let you know how it goes.

I just wanted to add, had you not been able to route your ethernet cable, you would probably be better off simply upgrading to N wireless as its much less vulnerable to interference and can produce much lower latetency. I currently use a N wireless network to game and get continuous pings of 1ms to the router.
