What to choose for a new NAS

    Hello

I am trying to decide between the below two NAS boxes.

    http://www.ebuyer.com/product/189996

    http://www.ebuyer.com/product/234869

I want a device that is DNLA compliant so I can stream to my phone, Xbox 360 and soon Media box or bluray player with media streaming.

Also I want to be able to set up accounts for other people to be able to access content of the NAS from the internet.

Also I see speed varies quite alot, and from what I can tell these both average around 20 - 30mbs which looks good for this price.

I prefer the Freecom unit as I can buy a 1.5tb hard drive and add a second later. Also from what little I have seen online about the Freecom, it looks dead easy to set up and use. I am not a network geek, I have little knowledge when it comes to networking.

Any one have any experience or thoughts on those.... My budget is £150 if there are any better options.

Last one I set up (which is still giving sterling service) was a Netgear ReadyNAS Duo. I realise that's not on your list, but I liked it - solid build, decent performance and they're offering a free second 1TB drive at the mo' on the 1TB option. Beyond that, all I'd say is that I've had better experiences with Buffalo than Freecom kit (I have a bricked 2TB Datatank storage box under my desk at the moment).

Re: What to choose for a new NAS

I recently bought the dlink DNS-320 which is £70 into which I stuck in 2 1TB drives, been very impressed as has a friend who bought the same and stuck in 2x 2TB. The device has the usual media streaming capabilities inc itunes server, it also has CIFS, NFS and FTP ability and a web based explorer for file sharing as well as bittorent client although Ive not used that. I can hit 25MB/s on transfers using a GB switch. The fan can get noisey but only comes on if the unit gets very warm which isnt very often and Ive never heard it go full speed unless Ive turned that on manually to see how loud it got I like the selling point of a silent fan, its only silent when its off, which granted is 95% of the time
