Thinking Of Having O2 BB. Think Again!!

I have been an O2 BB customer for 2 years, and re-suscribed in October 2010.
Having been looking around their website, I found out that they have changed their packages, and anyone re-newing a 12 month subscription will be subject to their NEW packages.

Please see them here, and the latest caps they are putting on their LLU system: http://service.o2.co.uk/IQ/SRVS/CGI-...C&sms_ss=email

I called them up as I did not sanction this move and they were very apologetic.
It is clear that they DO NOT state this in their terms, and just offer a discount and state you will stay on the same package...this is LIES.

If you are thinking of going to O2 please don't!
If you are currently on their, then check your package, and if they have tried to stiff you like they did me, demand to leave and they will give you betweem 3 and 6 months for free. (i got 6)

As soon as this is over, i will be off to BE.
O2 used to be so good, but the way they are cloaking their upgrades is disgusting.

On of my mates started having issues with O2 and solved it by moving over to BE instead.

Funnily enough they are both part of the same company.

Re: Thinking Of Having O2 BB. Think Again!!

Big thread over on HUKD about this, I was offered 3 months free in exchange for a further 12 month contract, didn't go for it as although the operator said it'd be on the old package it's muddy as to whether that was the truth or not.

Happy paying £7.66 on an ongoing basis myself, 100GB cap wouldn't bother me but tales of throttling down to 50kB/s at peak time for some services DOES bother me!

Thanks for the heads up. I used to class O2 and Be* as one and the same, but not anymore.

Re: Thinking Of Having O2 BB. Think Again!!

That streaming video cap is pretty pathetic on the basic package considering iPlayer won't buffer the whole file so you'll constantly get interrupted by pauses in the video. Can't say I'm surprised about the P2P caps though, if I owned an ISP and had to make cuts somewhere that would be the first thing to go. Firstly because it's not time-critical like streaming video/gaming and secondly because most of the traffic is undoubtedly illegal sharing so I don't see why it should get any sort of priority over legit activities.
I'm glad to see Be are sticking to their unlimited motto though.

    800kb/s...what does iPlayer stream at?

I don't really use P2P but want the option, I have downloaded a Linux distro once though (true story!) Not sure how gaming would be affected, could it class a P2P if using a PS3 or some PC games?

Re: Thinking Of Having O2 BB. Think Again!!

As others have pointed out that the O2 and Be* broadband are part of the same company. Plus net is part of BT btw. The Be* value product also has a usage cap of 50GB. The Be* Unlimited service however is ... unlimited however FUP exists for it. Unlimited also allows you to have a static IP address however they do not list this fact on the web site. So unless you can get annex M and want faster uploads (My house is too far away) or you want more than one static IP, don't get the pro service.

I would like to point out that I do have Be* Unlimited so I may be biased.

Re: Thinking Of Having O2 BB. Think Again!!

I just went to the O2 website, doesn't look like anything has changed, these new packages had been announced some time ago, there was some talk but there are two packages that still offer "unlimited" with FUP, I don't quite see what the fuss is about, certainly would not prevent me recommending O2 still, which I have been doing with these "new" packages.

iplayer doesn't have a constant stream from what I can tell (not like Youtube), for me it has very high burst downstream (1.5MB/sec for 1-2 seconds) every 20-30 seconds or so.

Where do you see the 50GB cap? Be value has no cap from what I can see, just lower max sync of 12Mbps with 1.3Mbps upstream

Looks like I read it wrong on the forum! be value used to have a 40GB cap and was £7.50, now it has no cap and is £14.08.

iPlayer isn't great at the best of times, especially the HD one. I have a consistent 10Mbps connection but every so often while watching iPlayer HD it will keep freezing and say something like 'you need at least a 4Mbps connection to use HD'.

Re: Thinking Of Having O2 BB. Think Again!!

I have switched to using iplayer desktop so queue up all the programs I want to watch and get them downloaded as and when it can. That way I can watch without interruption (except that of my daughter). The downside of this is now I have 10 programs I have not watched yet. By the looks of it thats pretty aggressive traffic shaping and the package prices are some on inline with the Be* ones, (about 1 pound a month less) and Be* claims not to traffic shape.

If you renew they HAVE to change you. I spoke to them about it.
If you just carry on, and don't bother calling, you stay on the old package.
I just went to the O2 website, doesn't look like anything has changed
You need to look a bit harder. There are many changes.

    No traffic shaping at all

    Any different from this post?
    http://forums.thedigitalfix.co.uk/fo...d.php?t=599324

As I said I recommend "things" to people often, I tend not recommend stuff without either using said product myself or would consider switching to them if my first choice went kaput etc... so I do keep upto date before I recommend something in a post.

Either way, I did not read the info from that source first I can't seem to find the article or press release, so the info on changes in traffic limits etc... isn't particularly new to me.

    Anyway forget that,
So they force you to change package after your current contract with no limits expires? With Be you can keep on using your existing package forever (in theory), however if you change package you can only choose from the existing packages and you can not change back to your old one.

Have been on Pro package for 2-years and declined offers of 3,6mths free BB. Currently using a friends O2 number for discount.

I usually hook up my Sony TV and use iPlayer HD no problems whatsoever with streaming.

In fact in 2 years only once I had a 10-15 minutes outage. Really happy with O2 BB services (touch wood).

Having said that I will not re-negotiate a new contract.
