    Gigabit switch

    Hey all,
Just had my house networked up with Cat 6.
Was looking at getting a GS108UK. Is that still a good choice, or would something else be better? Looking at about £60.

in my experience the GS series switches are about as solid as you get for non-managed switches. Been running a GS105 and a GS108 here with pretty much no unplanned downtime in the last 4 years or so.

HP ProCurve 1810G-8. They are often on ebay for <£45. I uses the 1810G-24.

    Re: Gigabit switch

are you sure they are on eBay for that mony? Looking at the moment they are way more expensive than that, I have seen the old 1800G-24 rev A go for £50 ish.

How many ports do you need? I have an old rackmount 8 port Gigabit 3COM Baseline Switch you can have for the cost of P&P , it does have a fan that will need replacing but they are a few quid and it even comes with rackmount ears

    Re: Gigabit switch

    140506422782 is currently £45+6.50 postage.

I've bought two 1810G-8 on ebay over the past few months - they cost, in total, £33.02 and £25.99. I had a "second chance offer" on another, but at £39.77 in total I thought that was actually a bit too much anyway So, the same seller will probably be listing another soon.

The 24-port version goes for a fair bit more on ebay - the cheapest one visible in "completed items" cost £135.99 including delivery. My 1810G-24 cost £130 in total from ebay last September.

    Re: Gigabit switch

doh yes you are correct (just noticed you posted saying the -8 was that price not the -24!)

    Re: Gigabit switch

Thanks all, esp Jay for the offer. It's not going to be rack mounted, so I'll pass. I've had a space cleared under the stairs which I'm planning on turning into a replica of the base in Superman III.

    Re: Gigabit switch

Used the GS108 myself with no problems. However Netgear now do an 8 port managed switch - the GS 108T-V2 It costs around the £100 mark though.

    Re: Gigabit switch

+1 for the GS108 - have an 8 and the 5 port variants, and theyre both brilliant - solid construction and a decent warranty too.
