Simple IP monitor/ping software ? (free if possible)

Google hasn't realy helped me out much so maybe someone here could help ?.

I'm after some software that will monitor connectivity to an IP address, and after a set time with no repsonse to pings will send an e-mail using SMTP. All I need is something as simple as that, no clever or expensive software that has all the bells and whistles.

Something dirt cheap, £10/£25, that I can just buy with a credit card online or something open source that can run as a service on Windows.

I've used it in the past, nice bit of software.

I stupidly forgot to mention that something that runs as a service within Windows is realy what I need, so the chances of a cheap option in the £25 or so bracket is pretty slim (a couple of hundred for the Pro version of the above that will run as a service ).

Thanks for the Nagios suggestion, it's something that I keep meaning to setup at some point just to have a play around with it and SNMP.

If it's just for a single or small handful of hosts would it not be just as easy to knock up some .vbs or Pwershell to do this?

That said: it doesn't do email (not sure how vital that aspect is) but this is free and does ping monitoring of hosts, and can notify with popups (I'm guessing Net Send type things), might do enough?

Re: Simple IP monitor/ping software ? (free if possible)

You have described one of the (many) features of server monitoring software.

Thankfully there are several open source server monitoring tools available for nothing. My company uses Zabbix, badass suggested Nagios, there are probably others.

The down side is that these tools are overkill for what you want, and not that easy to configure. If you think your needs will expand in the furture, then I would say that it is worth the effort to learn one of those tools now.

If not, then what is your time worth? £20 on a simple and easy to configure tool may be cheaper than hours learning how to use a free tool.
