    Thumbs down O2 Price rise

From email I recieved today :

    Hello OILSHEIKH

Our Home Broadband and Home Phone call prices are changing

Internet use has changed dramatically over the last few years and this is likely to continue. We need to increase our prices so we can still give you the level of service you’d expect from us.

    We’re committed to providing award-winning service, including;

    • Free telephone technical support, based in the UK, available 24/7
    • Winner of Which(TM) Best Technology Services provider 2010
    • Fastest average broadband speeds through a telephone line as shown by OFCOM speed test results July 2010
    • Discount for O2 mobile customers - £5 off monthly broadband bill
    • Protection against viruses with McAfee software

From 31 March 2011 your monthly broadband cost will be £13.00 and your monthly call package will be £13.25 (including line rental). The minimum charge for calls made outside your package will be 12.8p. Any discount or free period you already have – like a three months free offer – will stay unchanged.

I currently have Anytime Landline and the Mid package with O2 ( 20Mbps and unlimited ) and pay £22.50. Now, it's gonna be £26.25

I dont understand why broadband and phone prices are rising. It's not bloody gas or electricity!

Ive trimmed out the least important parts.

The prices are rising because their gas and electric is going up by a small amount, and they can gouge extra from customers to ensure they make a nice profit.

Same reason that, whilst BoE rates are 0.5%, over the last year unsecured bank loan rates have got up.

Strange thing is, if youre paying more, shouldnt the level of service increase rather than just remain the same?

Maybe all of us O2 customers need to call and ask for MAC code and we'll be given 12 months at a low bill. : )

    Re: O2 Price rise

Its certainly a good way to show your anger at their, tbh, probably unjustified price rise.

It does seem to be purely for their "thickie support", sometimes it really is better to have to pay to phone them up, since it reduces the cost to those that know what theyre doing.

I've not been told any of this...are they allowed to do this? i thought that would be a breach of contract?

    Re: O2 Price rise

I've not had it, got the VAT increase of course but that was expected. I'm only on BB though, £7.66 for the 'old' unlimited package (@ 20% VAT)

Could call & get 6months or so free on the new tariffs but they have traffic shaping & although it probably wouldn't affect me I like the option being open.

    Re: O2 Price rise

Traffic shaping? are u suggesting o2 do this? but only on their new packages?

Because if you are then that explains why ive been getting a very odd ping since moving over to the new all rounder package....

    Re: O2 Price rise

Yep, new packages are shaped, P2P down to something stupid like 500kb/s (kiloBITS!)

Loads around the net on it, people were getting free months when renewing on the 'old' tariffs but were actually getting switched to the new tariffs with shaping/limits.
Otherwise I'd jump at the chance for a free 6months!

EDIT: Alos on the O2 forums I've just read my tariff will be going up from £7.66 to £9.66, I've not been informed as mentioned earlier!

If you're on the new packages then you are shaped.

Actually your gaming packets wouldn't be shaped at all, even if they were, on the All Rounder package is Min 100 Kilobytes/sec, way more than enough for any game traffic.

    Re: O2 Price rise

CODMW2 i believe is based around P2P, no dedicated servers, and oddly enough i've been badly affect since changing over. So something is going on, Plus my gf use's the laptop, i've been doing test and my jitter and ping rise above 80 when she use's the laptop which again affects my gaming really sucks.

    Re: O2 Price rise

I got the going up by £2 email a while back. Not impressed, even less so now that O2 have had a lot of unannounced connectivity issues - every few days I get disconnects every 20s for about half an hour or more.

That has to be a mistake. 12.8p minimum charge for a call is excessive and a joke.
