    Extending an analogue line (kinda)

I'm sure this is a simple one but it's late in the day and my head is mashed.

My office is spread over 3 storeys.

The only analogue line is on the 3rd floor and is used solely for the broadband connection - this cannot be relocated.

Sods law dictates that two new devices have to be on the ground floor (and opposite end of the building) and both require a permanent analogue connection for their relevant communications.

    Is it possible to use the current ethernet network to extend the analogue line using one of those RJ11 > RJ45 thingumybobs (no idea what they're called) like so;

    Code:
     Floor 3
Analogue socket --- ADSL filter --- splitter --- router
                                            |
                                             --- 'thingumybob' into RJ45 socket
    Code:
     Ground floor
    RJ45 socket --- 'thingumybob' --- splitter --- device 1
                                          |
                                           --- device 2
    or am I talking crap?

Other options are dropping at least a 50 foot extension cable out the window and round the building or trying to find a path using the existing ethernet routes both of which will be hell on earth.

    Halp pleasethanks

What kind of devices are we talking about? Can you actually connect all 3 on one analogue line? Other than that I see no reason that you couldn't use your current structured cabling run to patch your analogue line elsewhere in the building.

Just a thought though - if your phones are VOIP then would a Cisco ATA do the job you're looking for? the ATA186 provides 2 analogue ports over ethernet.

Re: Extending an analogue line (kinda)

Thanks for confirming what I'd hoped.

One device is a card payment terminal, the other is a franking machine. While both manuals advise they need to be connected 24/7 they wont be using the line the entire time.

    Sadly our phones aren't VoIP.

Any ideas what the thingumybob's proper name is?

    Try this from Maplins:
    http://www.maplin.co.uk/bt-to-rj45-adaptors-22940

Assuming that the 'devices' all have BT plug ends.

You may want the 27E adaptor.

Re: Extending an analogue line (kinda)

    Thanks oldboy ()

I'm pretty sure our telephone sockets are all PBX (they don't work with normal consumer phones) but I'm not sure whether the analogue socket I need to extend is PBX.

I'm guessing it isn't because I've always used it with modems and it bypasses our switchboard.

So I'll want a 27E at each end - the most expensive ones, brilliant!

Sorry mycarsavw, I have been out all day. Simple test to see if it a PBX extension - do you have to dial 9 to make an external call. If yes then it's a PBX.

Re: Extending an analogue line (kinda)

One device has been using the connection for a month, the other, for two weeks.

No issues whatsoever - highly recommended method of doing this.

    Thanks for the help.

(eBay is cheaper than Maplin too!)
