    Modem only modes?

    Hi,

    Looking for a bit of advice here...

    I was really disappointed by the wireless speeds of my old O2 wireless box, so after some searching around found a common solution: a .ini file that made it act in 'modem-only' mode (as I would call it - correct term is "bridge mode" I think) and connected it to my Netgear Wireless-N Router. All was good:

    O2 box -> Netgear WNDR3700 -> Gigabit Switch -> ...

    I've just been sent an upgraded O2 wireless box IV (Thomson TG587N) and I can't for the life of me find out how to set it to bridge mode.

    Can someone offer a solution to this predicament (hopefully short of binning my router).... or just general advice?

    Thanks

    Is there a problem with just using the old one? Do you need a feature like adsl2 which the current one does not have? Is the new one faster than the old one? If not don't use it. Or buy your own adsl modem, I use a Draytek bridge only one at work. And Be(sister of O2) give me one that can be bridged at home.

    Re: Modem only modes?

    I recently did this with my dg834gt (sky branded) It's flashed with DGTeam firmware, I tried modem only function but I couldn't get it to work with my DGND3500.

    In the end I had leave it as normal router. Made sure DHCP was enabled on the DG834GT and disabled on the DGND3500, then the DGND3500 settings for the internet have to be static IP (set the gateway IP as your DG834GT IP address) Also make sure they are both using different IPs.

    It took me all day trying loads of configurations in order to get this working.

    This may help if you still want to upgrade:
    http://forum.o2.co.uk/viewtopic.php?t=4033

    You need telnet into your router. I think the username is SuperUser and the password is O2Br0ad64nd or the serial number of the router.

    Re: Modem only modes?

    Thanks folks - tried a few combinations last night probably settling with just using the new O2 adsl router: Wireless is definitely slower by >50% at 130Mbps through most of the house, against previous 270Mbps with the netgear. Although coverage is fine for the whole house as it was with the netgear. ADSL seems faster ~5-10%, although maybe that's wishful thinking. As Xbox and two main PCs are wired, as well as server, I'll probs just lump it.

    Anyone need a very good wireless router?!

    Re: Modem only modes?

    Just throwing a wireless access point onto the lan segment and using that insted of the O2 wi-fi would be easier that way you could just keep the new ADSL as stock. You can do the same with an old router, (just so long as you turn off the dhcp). Access points work like network hubs they know nothing about IP, so all the network setting come from your router. The network address on that access point does not even have to be valid for you network for it to work for clients, though that does make it hard to change settings.

    In an adsl router

    Wi-Fi->LAN is bridged.
    Wi-Fi->WAN/ADSL is routed.
    LAN->WAN/ADSL is routed.

    Bridged means everything it hears on one side it transmits on the other. (Bridges are really symmetrical).
    Routed means it looks at each IP packet, and decides if it should be sent to the other side (and perhaps modified (ie NAT)).
