    Moving house, BB options

I'm moving next month and considering my BB options. Here is the short list:

    ADSL24 - Fibre30
    BE - Unlimited
    Virgin - XL
    Sky - Unlimited

My new place is 2026m away from the exchange, plenty of options:

    BT Wholesale ADSL
    BT Wholesale ADSL Max
    BT Wholesale WBC (21CN)
    BT Wholesale SDSL
    BT FTTC
    AOL LLU
    O2 / Be LLU
    Bulldog LLU
    TalkTalk (CPW) LLU
    Sky Broadband / Easynet LLU
    Tiscali LLU
    Tiscali TV (via Tiscali LLU)
    Orange LLU (Formerly Wanadoo)
    Virgin Media (Cable)

I have been a previous subscriber to Virgin's ADSL service and i pledged i would never ever use Virgin again, although i understand their cable service is somewhat better providing you don't require any assistance. The main thing putting me off Virgin is there ridiculous fair usage and bandwidth throttling policy.

I'm tempted by BE as they get pretty good reviews and would appear cost effective. ADSL24 have been good to me for 4 years but there are cheaper options.

So to sum up, Virgin probably have the best speed / price ratio but not sure if i want to use them again. 5.5Mbps or greater is the predicted ADSL2+ speed.

Given my options, which would you recommend? Far to many choices

BeThere hands down. Nothing else comes close for me.

Bethere, while I can not vouch for other areas, it has certainly been very good for me so far.

I used to have 20 meg virgin cable I now have 5 meg Be* unlimited, and I could swear my Be* connection is faster than my old virgin cable was, you can also get a static IP address with Be and they will setup a reverse look up for your IP. With Be* get a solid 5 meg (noticiable when downloading iplayer desktop content), with virgin it would peek on 20meg then rapidly drop.

I would say though if you need to get a phone line installed get your request into the system as fast as you can as it can take them over a month.

With Virgin they will offer to do an install on a moving day, the problem is if they do not do the prep work, your get nothing on that day. If you go with cable make sure there is a wire to the hole at the edge of the house before you take the day off work. If they fail to install this cable (as the did with me) you will be left in limbo. If you go the ADSL route you can switch to infinity at some point in the near future.

Yeah BT FTTC, or a reseller such as ADS24 on the same technology would be worth a go IMO, I see little reason to go ADSL when you have two FTTC (BT/VM) in your area unless you don't need it fast. VM's ADSL cable is known for being crap, the cable is a whole different story though, don't let your experience put you off. Yes the support could be better but when it's working it's excellent for most people, including myself. For ADSL though, Be would be my choice.

    Re: Moving house, BB options

BeThere if you can afford it, considering all the companies I've dealt with, top notch service. Good forum as well.

Pretty sure it was a Hexite who put me on to them, and whom I gave £20 to as a referral discount.

    edit: yes it t'was... "Moogle".

edit 2.0: on checking yes we struggled with getting a discount but BeThere ended up giving me free connection and 1 month free (£46 saving), and I split it with him via Bank Transfer (only fair).

edit 3.0: I've mentioned elsewhere, with birth of 1st sprog I mentioned was looking at cutting costs ie SKY for BB, whilst not price matching they gave me a nice offer, still with them after +3 years. In terms of leaving them, the in-laws went on their £7.50 offer which unfortunately they ended this March/April, they where very polite with a cheeky request to see if anything could be done pricewise, unfortunately not but their whole MAC-request/transfer and modem return was totally faultless and free.

    Re: Moving house, BB options

Easy answer to this one - you can get Infinity or Virgin cable, so take whichever of those two works out the cheapest for the top package.

Stay clear of standard xDSL if you can - it's less reliable than both Infinity or Virgin cable, and much much slower.
