What is Domain Name System (DNS) do ?

Been looking at getting the following router for my father to replace his rubbish orange live box. I was looking at the below.

    http://www.ebuyer.com/product/204781

But I see from one reviewer that is does not support DNS from cable connections. Now how will this affect the average user. I do have a concern that my father will have a NAS drive plugged up to this router and network printer which we will need to access from other locations.

The NAS box will need access from the web from another location. Will this become a problem.

Wut? DNS is the magic that converts domain names (eg www.hexus.net) into ip addresses. It doesn't support DNS for cable connections? I suspect the reviewer doesn't fully understand what DNS is.

Re: What is Domain Name System (DNS) do ?

This is what the reviewer wrote on the website. I like this router as it slim and will work with orange broadband which has some funny setting thing that not all routers support.

'I've installed one or two routers in my time and I could not get this thing working without calling Buffalo Tech support, who were excellent, BUT the hoops you have to jump through to get this thing working are a joke...
But the main reason this product gets 1 Star....DNS does not work via a cabled connection only via Wireless !!!
Tech support have known about it for some time but Buffalo have done nothing about it....'

If that were true, the vast majority of people that bought it would not be able to use it and they would return it or it would be fixed via a software update. He must be meaning something else that only works over Wifi.

personally I'd rather go for this one anyway: http://www.scan.co.uk/products/edima...-4-port-switch

I am open to options. I didn't really see the need to spend past £35 unless I got gigabyte Lan ports built in, but these seem more than buying a cheap 4 port hub separate.

Looking at my browser history I looked into the Edimax router, not sure why I was not tempted.
Think it was the fact I could buy a matching Buffalo wireless access point for my dad to hook up else where in their house under the TV to extend the wifi signal and plug in their Xbox 360 and bluray player to the net.

Re: What is Domain Name System (DNS) do ?

I would have expected he might have meant DHCP not DNS, (DHCP is the thing that gives your computer an IP address and also gives it the IP address of the DNS servers), DNS servers can be manually set the is a problem with the ones that are handed out, (as can be done with ip) however this is not ideal if your computer regularly moves network. He also might have meant the default gateway, which would have meant your computer could not route out to public DNS servers.

If he did mean DNS, he could have ment dynamic DNS, where your computer name is added to the local dns after it DHCPs the an address. Which this is useful so some it not a must have feature.

Unless you are wire the second access point in, it would have the same lack of signal your X-box and blu-ray have. If you have a wire there why do you need another access point! If your using a wireless repeat mode you need to put the new access point half way (and a little more) between the old one and where you want your additional range. To far away your get high latency and low bandwidth due to the poor signal strength.

Set up that he has currently is as follows :
Computer and internet router are upstairs. Orange live box is rubbish. Wi-fi won't work
Xbox and bluray are downstairs but not currently connected to the net - which I want to achieve.
He has wi-fi laptop and phone which I want to work of the internet router.

So I was thinking new ADSL wi-fi router to replace the live box. This will solve all his wifi issues.
Then if I use a wifi router down next to the xbox and bluray player, I can set these to use this router which will connect to the ADSL router upstairs.

Re: What is Domain Name System (DNS) do ?

    Regarding getting ethernet downstairs -
I tried to get two different routers to work together using WDS to do a similar thing and could never get it to work. If I was you I'd avoid WDS unless its the same manufacture for both devices. I'd probably recommend instead getting a proper wireless access point or as I did in the end after weeks of frustration - wire the two routers together using a 40m cable!

You could also try using powerline adaptors to connect your router to a switch downstairs - I had to avoid these as I have two mains circuits in my house.

There are some more revbiews here

    http://www.amazon.co.uk/Buffalo-AirS...2387232&sr=8-1

although overall not particularly glo0wing. Personally I would look at the Draytek units - but they are around 4 -6 times the price of the Buffalo, depending on model and facilities.
