    ADSL Connection problems

I have had intermittent problems with my internet connection for over a year. At first I was connecting to my BB (Virgin ADSL) with a Thomson Speedtouch 330 and every so often it would just stop working - I would get page time-outs and just couldn't use internet, send or receive mail. I would just have to reconnect and then it would work. In the end I bought a Belkin router/modem (Belkin G Wireless Modem Router) and wire connected this into a Belkin Network card. It didn't make much difference and I would still get random disconnects.
At that time I had Win Vista.
Recently, I had a C-drive crash and replaced my HDD. When I did so, I loaded Win7. I am still getting intermittent connection problems, but have looked further into the details. When I have a problem it shows as being unable to load a web page. I get timed out, but "Diagnose" identifies no problems.

I opened a cmd line and checked ping. I can ping the router by IP address and i can ping things like Google by both IP and URL. I checked ipconfig /all at three different times. First when I had a good connection, then when the connection failed mid-session and then when i couldn't connect from the outset. Comparing the results shows no significant changes. The only things to change, and it was different sessions, were the ipv6 addresses and lease expiry date, everything else remained the same.

A couple of other odd things.
To reset my router, I usually go to its "Webpage" using its URL-192.168.2.1 (I've even got a shortcut on my desktop for this). Usually, it opens up the controls for the router and I can just restart from there. This usually works, but not always. Sometimes i get page time-outs for the router, even though I can ping it. I then have to reset the router by disconnecting power and even that doesn't work everytime. When it becomes that bad, which has only happened a couple of times, then I have found that doing a system restore will help

Sometimes when i can't access internet, ie get page time-outs, my e-mail will still download - though much more slowly than normal.

I have tried replacing the ADSL filter, the telephone line from the socket, the cable from the router to the PC and I have updated the drivers of both the network card and the router. Because i have replaced my C drive i have got very few programs running. My start up list consists of Avast (antivirus) and Comodo (firewall). I have disabled the windows firewall in case of conflict

    Does anyone have any suggestions

    Thanks

    Re: ADSL Connection problems

There are probably some more knowledgeable people who can help you, but perhaps this will help in the discovery a little bit:

You router may have a web page containing logs (e.g. when it gets disconnected), signal-to-noise ratio (and other technical details like this) and whether the router is actually connected to the internet (e.g. ASDL - not connected). The status of these pages before and during the issues may be helpful.

    tracert www.google.com

The above command may be more interesting than a ping.

Certain internet services (e.g. email) working while others don't could suggest that you are not able to access your DNS. You can manually change your DNS address in your router or in your network adaptor settings (Network and Sharing Center, Change adaptor settings, right click local area connection, properties, Internet Protocol version 4, properties, Use the following DNS Server address, 8.8.8.8 [This is Google's DNS I believe])

No doubt the solution will not be this simple, but its a start!

    Re: ADSL Connection problems

    Hi Guys
Thanks for the replies. First, most of the time I don't seem to have a DNS problem as I can ping both IPs and URLs, however, I had already set a secondary DNS host (Comodo) on a just in case basis. I have looked at my router logs and couldn't see anything that appeared to be a problem. I intend to do this again and compare results working and non-working.

Yes, I have spoken to Virgin and they suggested wiring problems at home, to which end I replaced everything from the BT socket, but to no avail.

The bit that puzzles me is when I get a page time-out to my router. This suggests to me that there may be an issue in the PC. I don't think its the router as I had similar problems (frequent and intermittemt disconnects) with my old USB modem. As that connected via usb and the router through a network card, it suggests perhaps a mobo problem. Again, I don't think its software as I replaced my C drive and have a brand new OS (Vista to Win7) and haven't put much on in the way of programs.

If I didn't get page time-outs on accessing the router set up via its IP, then I would be firmly convinced that it was an ISP issue

Finally, one thing I forgot to mention above was that a couple of times, when i couldn't get to the router controls and unplugging it didn't help, then a system restore did help. This, of course does suggest that Windows updates may be an issue.

    Still scratching my head

    Again, thanks for the suggestions

    Jolia
