    Home Network Bandwith Control

    Hey,

I am hoping for a bit of advice on how to control the bandwith on my home network. I currently have a wireless network using a pretty slow (54MBps) router with a cable modem (virgin in the UK).

There are quite a few people in the house, and i am pretty sure that some are doing filesharing which is killing my bandwith for general surfing (especially when we get penalised for hitting our quotas).

Does anyone know of a good router that can help control the bandwith (preferrably through an easy to use UI) of the wireless network, whilst giving good speeds as well? Ideally if i can see how much bandwith certain IP or MAC addresses are using that would be good.

I have very limited knowledge when it comes to networking, so something simple would be ideal. I have tried an EDIMAX router which was good (and gave a fairly cumbersome way of controlling bandwith), but it has died. Other than trying the same thing again, any thoughts?

Is there a better way of doing this rather than through the router?

    Thanks in advance.

    Matt

The Draytek 2820 does a pretty good job of that.

I use an Alix 2C3 with m0n0wall for traffic shaping. Not really for networking novices though - it takes a while to set up properly.

Draytek 2710n can do the same too, very simple to understand and set up.

    Re: Home Network Bandwith Control

It might have been, not sure because it had to go back due to a firmware issue.

    Re: Home Network Bandwith Control

If you are willing to go with a custom firmware, gargoyle would be the best fit. It's specifically designed for exactly what you need.
Tomato or dd-wrt can do some of that but the overview of bandwidth used by IP is a Gargoyle-only feature.
