    Use router as wireless adaptor?

Hi, I'm moving into a new place on wednesday and they offer free wireless internet. I am going to be too far away to run a cable to my pc so need to come up with some sort of wireless solution. I've had 3 ideas so far, just curious whether these would work?

1- somehow use an old o2 broadband router/modem as a wireless adaptor connected to pc by network cable

2- use orange san francisco's wifi in tethering

3- buy one of these http://www.7dayshop.com/catalog/prod...ucts_id=111515(or a better quality alternative)

Would be interested to hear what other people do to connect wirelessly, i'd prefer not to spend too much if possible as a may not be living there long. I do a fair bit of online gaming so i suppose fast speed is a priority?

Option 1 has the potential to be a nightmare but it can work. If it works, it works best if their wireless and your old o2 box are the same. I don't know if either your or their routers have the necessary functionality however. I do option 1 at the moment with an o2 box to an old router but it required flashing the firmware of the old router, with all the potential for bricking that this option has.
I flashed it with DD-WRT. You can check if your router is supported on their database.

Re: Use router as wireless adaptor?

It sounds like whatever happens, you're going to be connecting wirelessly, so I would just do it properly and buy a wireless adapter.

USB adapters can be really horrible, so I would be very careful. I've had a lot of luck with these personally

Re: Use router as wireless adaptor?

    Option 3!

    1. will only work if both routers support WDS and then you might as well have an open network as you could crack it in minutes (possible seconds)

    2. will work but for the sake of a fiver do you want to be unable to use your phone whenever using your PC?

Re: Use router as wireless adaptor?

for all the cost of it, just buy a wireless networking adapter and do it properly.

That tiny little adapter looks great, but I would personally get one with a proper aerial. I've have great results with this: http://www.scan.co.uk/products/edima...reless-adaptor

Re: Use router as wireless adaptor?

I use the powerline adapters in a few places in my house as my master socket is by the front door and putting the router anywhere else dramatically drops the speed of the net, my front room is on the 3rd floor of my house. The adapters work just fine for browsing and online gaming.

I tried to do a bridge with my old reflashed Homehub and my Sky router, absolute dog to set up and after a few hours just gave it up as a bad thing. If you want to do wireless get a wireless access point and put it halfway between yourself and the router.
