    TalkTalk vs Sky

    Hi,

I am looking at changing to either Sky or TalkTalk for broadband calls + line rental, I was wondering if people on here have had any experiences of either of them.

    Thanks,

    Re: TalkTalk vs Sky

Sky have a genuinely unlimited internet package, with no restrictive FUP, TalkTalk doesn't (to my knowledge).

How important that is to you, I don't know.

    Re: TalkTalk vs Sky

I am on the most expensive Sky Unlimited package and it is unlimited and the ping is decent. Speeds are horrible. I am supposed to get around 4MB but get around 2MB. This has been despite repeatedly talking to the technical staff. It has been gradually getting worse and worse over the last 18 months. Was getting speeds of nearly 4MB early last year. Ringing them up usually means the speed is partially restored and then the cunning bastards then quietly drop the speed right down again.

    Re: TalkTalk vs Sky

I am fed up with their crappy technical support. The thick idiots don't seem to get it after a billion calls to them and the calls are not free too.

I was getting around 3MB until a month or so ago and now it is 2MB. Just bloody great!!

    Re: TalkTalk vs Sky

We get approximately 12Mb from Sky.

I just went onto their site to see what their line checker estimates for us, but it says we aren't eligible for the unlimited package, so heck knows what's going on.

They are load of lying bloody toads. I have just given up on their rubbish technical support. The line is supposed to be capable of 5.5MB in our area too.

I wish I had got Virgin fibre optic broadband now.

If it drops any more I going to phone them up and tell them where to stick their "unlimited" broadband. We are on the most expensive package and we get a paupers service.

    Re: TalkTalk vs Sky

I know my line is capable of 6Mb on standard broadband, and indeed that's what Sky predict for their standard broadband package.

I guess on the basis that 8Mb * 2 = 16Mb, then assuming our connection scales perfectly, 6Mb * 2 = 12Mb (what we're currently getting), shows that Sky are giving us pretty much what they promised.

I do wonder how they've been so appalling for you, but then so many companies vary from area to area and person to person.

    Re: TalkTalk vs Sky

    WHAT!!!

    WHAT!!

    WHAT!!

    WHAT!!

I just checked their flipping site and now it says we can get 7.0Mbps - 14.3Mbps.

BT HAVE UPGRADED THE LINE AND THEY DROPPED OUR SPEED!!

    WTF??

    Right!!

The lying load of scammers are going to get a piece of my mind in the next few days.

If they start their standard bull**** of increasing the speed after a phone call and then dropping it a week later I am going to shout so loudly down the ear piece that their technical support person will blown across the cubicle.

Is BeThere available in your area? If so, well worth it.

I'm on the BeUnlimited package for £22/month which is very good value considering it is unlimited, 24mb/1.3mb and with no traffic management to affect your enjoyment.

    Re: TalkTalk vs Sky

I joined sky a little while ago. Phoned Talktalk before hand, as both were offering adsl2+ in our area. The TalkTalk chimps really put me off, never heard so many lies and so much bs from a salesman. My neighbour got talktalk, and regretted it, terrible speeds and terrible customer service.

Sky has been great, up until a week or so ago, when i started getting random disconnects, and a drop in speed. An openreach engineer failed to turn up yesterday, because sky didn't fully verify the order, due them not reading the notes properly. Got another engineer due on Monday. Generally the tech support is pretty good for me, when its answered by someone in the UK.

Cat, if you have skytalk, you can ring them for free on 150. I also have a direct number to tier 2 tech support here. (0844 unfortunately, free if you ring on a skytalk landline, but they say they'll refund any costs for me if i ring on a mobile.) Let me know if you want it.

In summary; I find the sky ADSL2+ pretty good, but have heard that their sky connect service is pants. Customer service is pretty good, tier 2 seem polite and knowledgeable. Their interior communications are not great, but i'll say no more on that for now.

I am not on Connect BTW but the most expensive ADSL2 one. It is easy to get hold of a technical services chap but they have not bothered to get this sorted out over an 18 month period.

However, even on tier 2 they did didn't do that much. All I saw was a bump in speed followed by a drop after a week or two. Have phoned them many times and they have never sent round an engineer. This has been happening since early last year.

Its a joke that even after loads of phone calls the speed as dropped from around 4MB to barely 2MB since early last year!! Ping has also got worse too. I am livid since it seems instead of the original 5.5MB max BT has upgraded the line this year to between 7MB to 14MB. In the last month the speed has dropped form 3MB to 2MB.

I would like tier 2 direct number please and I am going to demand they send round an engineer. Sky have been the worst broadband company I have ever used.

    Re: TalkTalk vs Sky

Its a shame to hear it had been such a nightmare for you, not that i should be apologising on their behalf! I know that the tier 2 lot can book an engineer visit, but another tier has to verify that call out. My visit yesterday was cancelled by this higher tier, and one of them tried to cancel my visit on Monday at some point this morning. I got a text message saying that sky needed more info to progress with fixing my fault. There definitely seems to be problems in that tier.

Have you tried posting over at the skyuser forums? There seems to be some useful folk over there.

Will pm the tier 2 number now.

    Re: TalkTalk vs Sky

Talktalk and Sky are the two ISP's I recommend friends avoid.
Both have given friend and relatives shocking customer support, Talktalk supplied one of the worst routers I've ever experienced and a number of Sky-using friends plan to abandon the ISP when they're contracts for renewal - possibly even the TV services as well.

With a BT line BE Unlimited and Zen remain my recommendations. BE because it's terms are less irritating and colleagues who use them have had good technical support when setting up. Zen because they claim to focus on reduced contention within their network and have well reviewed service levels. Of the two BE is by far the cheapest and Zen takes longer to get their versions of BT product to market (supposedly because of quality concerns).

If I were forced to choose it would be Sky if only because Talktalk are so clearly geared towards giving out the cheapest possible no-name kit and expecting users to take the blame when it fails.
