    What device do I need?

I travel a lot and I often find that hotels only have a wired Internet connection. This requires a LAN cable to connect my laptop to the Internet.

What I would like to do is plug a wireless device into the LAN port in the hotel room so that I can then access the Internet through WiFi. This would also allow me to use my smartphone and tablet in the hotel room.

What device do I need that would plug into the LAN port and provide me with a WiFi access point? I'm really after something very small so that I can pack it in my suitcase.

Re: What device do I need?

Unfortunately ethernet doesn't carry enough power to run such a device, so anything you take will need a wall power adapter. Something like: amazon. co.uk/TRENDnet-300Mbps-Wireless-N-Travel-TEW-654TR/dp/B002G1CLS0/ref=dp_cp_ob_e_title_4 maybe.

Not a valid URL, sorry. Not enough posts yet. Just remove the space before .co.uk

You can save a bit of money by configuring your laptop to share the LAN Internet connection over WiFi rather than buying a wireless access point.

Re: What device do I need?

I tried setting up ICS on my work laptop but got 'Access Denied'. I have local Admin rights so that did confuse me somewhat. In fact, i've tried setting up ICS for a few months now!

In the end I ordered this:

    http://www.amazon.co.uk/TP-Link-TL-W...4214214&sr=8-1

It's the TP-Link TL-WA701ND 150Mbps Wireless Lite N Access Point and I guess it'll do what I want. I'm not that bothered about having to use a mains power socket to power it as there's usually one or two free in hotel rooms. I'm just desperate to use the wired internet connection over wireless for my laptop, tablet and smartphone.

Re: What device do I need?

You could have used some old wireless router and just plugged the ethernet into one of the lan
ports. You might have to disable dchp for that to work properly.

Re: What device do I need?

Any wireless access point should do it yup (including the one you've linked to).
However, using it might contravene some providers' TOS... Just a heads up! :-)

On the plus side, you'll probably have left by the time they complain about it
