    Re-wire house for better internet

When I was at school my IT teacher told us that by re-wiring the telephone cable in a house with cat 5, the internet connection speed could be significantly improved. The reasoning was that the original cable was not designed for data and that one of the biggest signal losses was due to the wire in your home.

Has anyone tried this and noticed a difference? I'm considering it as one of the phone sockets needs to be re-wired

If your router is connected to your BT master socket then this makes no difference.
You could always test this - connect the router to an extension , then to the master socket - do a few speed tests at each one ( at the same time of day over repeated days to build up a statistically significant reult ) and see if there is any difference.

Re: Re-wire house for better internet

Our house is entirely CAT5e. The biggest differences you can make internally are to make sure you have a decent filter, and to disconnect the bell wire if running extensions.

Actually replacing internal telephone wiring won't make a huge difference unless you have extensions all over the place (a lot of which are poor quality). The biggest difference to speed is the length from the exchange and the SNR of the line.

A quick test is to connect the filter to your test socket behind the main master faceplate. Assuming that the master socket is the first one that enters the house then this will ignore any additional internal wiring and show your 'best' speed. If this shows an improvement, your internal wiring might benefit. If not, then changing it won't make a difference.

Thanks for the quick response guys. The router is already connected to the master socket unfortunately. I'm a long way from the exchange, just gonna have to live with it

BT do a faceplate for the master socket that can improve speeds a little bit. You get them for free if you are with bt.

Thanks, I'll investigate that further, do you know if it makes much of a difference?

It does the same as removing the bell wire (although it has a high quality filter built in). If you're happy doing this yourself, I wouldn't spend the extra cash

It's only worth bothering with if you aren't comfortable with removing the bell wire yourself..

That is of course if you even have a bell wire in the first place...

Re: Re-wire house for better internet

You should make sure you are connected on ADSL2+ rather than older ADSL, as this can make a big difference for people very far from the exchange. If you are very close to the exchange it is what takes your connection speed above 8Mb.
If your connection is one that supports speeds above 8Mb, you should be on a ADSL2+ connection already. (Note "supports" is not the same as suggesting you actually get that speed!)

Yes , difference occurs and also note that the 25-foot Belkin CAT 5e snagless patch cable is ideal for medium-distance connection of local area network (LAN) devices. Perfect in conjunction with 10 and 100 Base-T, and even 1,000 Base-T networks, this patch cable features gold-plated snagless RJ45 male/male connectors and carries a lifetime warranty.....!

Re: Re-wire house for better internet

Have you considered dropping the data onto a LAN on entry to the house and then move the data around using powerline technology - those plugs that you use in each room where you want access?
