What DD-WRT router?

Evening all,

I've currently got BeThere 24mb ADSL2+ and the supplied BeBox router. All well and dandy - gives good sync speed, but since adding more devices onto the network (I've wired up the house with Ethernet & Two beefy switches (50 port 3Com and 24 port Linksys GbE) it does struggle a bit.

As such, I was thinking of retaining the BeBox as it does give good sync speeds, but adding a DD-WRT Router to the setup such that I can then get higher performance (ie less crashes, quicker user interface etc etc). I understand I would be using the BeBox in bridge mode, then connecting the router to it - that I'm quite happy with.

What I do need assistance on is selecting the router appropriate for this. I've never had Cable (always ADSL around here) so never looked at Routers on their own.

What I was thinking in terms of needs:

DD-WRT Compatible
High Performance without breaking the bank:
GbE
WiFi (N a bonus, though none of my stuff actually is)

Though the reviews mention poor GbE throughput which concerns me. Any other suggestions?

Why do you want GbE?

Surely with the network wired up with switches, gigabit won't be an issue?

The switches are in an upstairs hall cupboard, and when I ran the cables through the house, I was only able to get 4 down to the study (awkward route to where I have the switches) - do wish I'd run more now though.

So of those 4 wall ports, I was thinking 1 uplink to the switch, then I have 1 PC, 1 Printer, 1 Laptop. To make things interesting I currently have my Microserver in there too (have swapped the printer so it runs directly off the router). As such, I was thinking having GbE on the router would give me a bit more flexibility in the future.

Got a friends TP-Link WR1043ND which I have flashed (no messing, just flash through web interface) and it runs the mega install perfectly.

The Buffalo WZR-HP-G300NH ticks all the boxes, it even has an official build of DD-WRT pre-installed, this router can be found online at the usual places for less than £70.

I also have this router. It's pretty good. I like the gigabit ports and usb port for local sharing of files. I bought mine last year and it came with Buffalo (User-Friendly) Firmware, which is fine. However, it does not support NAT loopback. So my webserver was not visible from the internet. I've installed the DD-WRT 'professional' firmware from Buffalo's website and it is great. You can do allsorts - as you probably know, hence the request for DD-WRT capable router.

another plus for the tplink its great value for the money and runs ddwrt very well

Did the DD-WRT 'professional' firmware sort everything out (so you where able to access your server externally over the internet)?

I am thinking about getting one but I need external ssh/sftp access! If I cant have it then this isnt the router for me!

Also anyone know what the wireless range is like?

I host a web server behind my Buffalo G300NH running DD-WRT, I can also SSH from outside.

EDIT: Wireless range is good, I get a reasonable signal from the back of the garden with the router at the front of the house.

My own choice would be to get a ethernet based adsl modem > then a decent router say cisco > and for wireless a seperate AP - asking most routers to deal with the adsl side - traffic and wireless kills them these days.

Still haven't got round to deciding - the BeBox is fine in most situations, just certain loads it doesn't seem to like much

Just thought I'd update the thread - I ordered the TP Link.
