How to make a wifi reach for miles for a tenner

I was wondering recently how to get wifi up to the house, without buying a repeater, and apparently can get several miles by using parabolic chips strainers.

Superb! I have use for that. Just tried out some way expensive Dlink kit from work in my houses to link them both together over 2 driveways and through 2 outside walls. No go. Had some signal 10-20% but connection was very erratic. Nasty. These dish things are exactly what i need! Superb find I LOVE YOU VIET KONG ZOMBI *huggies kisses various sexual acts etc*

Extremely interested in trying this but a few questions...

    1) Do you NEED an access point for WIFI to work or would you do with with say 2 USB WIFI adapters?

    2) USB Cables seem very short - would it be be possible to daisy chain cables or would signal be lost?

hmmm someome explain that to me in lamens terms. I have a wireless usb adapter coming out of my desktop, and this connects my laptop to the net. It can reach outside and thru 3-4 walls (60ft).

Would this DIY wifi thing bennefit me?

Basically the dishes focus the WIFI signals to a focal point in the centre and slightly in front of the dishes / whatevers. If the USB adapter is in the focal point it will get a stronger signal than it could normally receive on its own. This increases the potential distance that the adapters will work for. The formula for the focal point is on one of the images on that site zombi posted.

    Would it benefit you...

Will you be further than 60ft away from your PC? Do you have the need to set up a DIY dish and pick up signals from that far away?

A friends of mine lives aobut 150 - 200 metres away from me and we are trying to work out a way of doing this atm. Answered my own questions btw with a bit of googling

    Ad Hoc Wireless Connections

    2) USB Cables seem very short - would it be be possible to daisy chain cables or would signal be lost?

Seems that USB cables have a max length of about 5m before they become useless. Nothing to do with signal strength but with the timing of the signals and how they are sent along apparently.

    Linky bout USB length

    Little more googling...

    USB Extension Cables

Maximum of five can be daisy chained to make a 25m USB lead.

Thanks, it's a great link, I just hope that it works as well for us as the guy in New Zealand.

Normally on your signal rates display programme, it shows how loud you receive signals are in decibel, and with a homemade dish, can increase this signal by up to 18 decibel which can be a 8x distance, and this can work wonders with 2 aligned distance parabolic antennas.
You go to shops and look for a perfect size strainer, measuring the curve by comparing it to the curve of a chain which is virtually parabolic, seal the pictures on the link.
The holes in this dish should be less than five millimetres across.
Then you place a cheap USB and wireless card at the focal point of the dish shape. Very exactly.
All the details are on the link, all you need for the receiver is a wifi USB gizmo, a USB extension, and they dish shape. An old satellite dish would probably receive signals miles away from what this guy says.
Hope it works, sounds fun for sure, time for wifry netwok
