Sounds good to me! No data rates mentioned though...

Fast and expensive probably.
"The 21st century network (21CN) will replace the UK's public switched telephone network (PSTN) and will carry both voice and data services. The mass migration of customers onto the new network is set to begin in 2006 with the majority shunted across by 2008. Before then, BT is to trial 21CN in Cambridge and Woolwich."
Nice, finally some proper investment?

Do you think some MD at BT has been reading the threads on Hexus
No - but don't bet on this being implemented any time soon. Running fibre to everyones house will anhiilate BT's leased line for businesses service, and thats a bleedin expensive rip off service that BT will never let die easily, they make far too much easy money off it.
Nope, you won't see your streets being dug up for a long time yet, BT will drag this out as long as they posssibly can IMHO! (Just like they did with ADSL in order to try and save as much of their ISDN business as possible).

There is one area in which current leased line services are significantly better, and that's contention ratios. We have a 2mb leased line here (not BT, and rather a lot cheaper, though it still costs us about 9k a year) and rather than sharing bandwidth between 20-50 other customers, we get a 1:1 contention ratio. If you're hosting services, that can make a big difference.Originally Posted by Butuz
They've already stated that even if they adopt it, they'll only be doing so for new build, so if you've already got copper, they won't be upgrading it.Originally Posted by Butuz
No, it's fibre to the last junction box, then over the existing copper for the last hop which according to the engineers I've spoken to will solve most of the problems of the current network.

Yep - i agree, but bear in mind the contention ratio is not infrastructure related, all it takes is a few clicks of a mouse by a fat BT engineer and your 1:1 leased line could become a 50:1 lagfestOriginally Posted by nichomach
I think also you can get 1:1 adsl services too tho thats expensive if i rember. If your hosting, a leased line is definatly the most reliable way to go. Cant get more reliable than having a chunk of fibre ran straight into your backbone switch can ya!

Fortunately, our engineers are of the Your Communications (used o be Norweb Telecom) variety and not bt ones; they are by comparison therefore positively svelte...Originally Posted by Butuz

I was just thinking that BT have not come out with any porkys this week but just seen news in W/E press that they are saying by the end of the year only a 100,000 people will not beable to get Broadband. Oh BT you really must have a talk with your engineers so they can give you the correct numbers or is that going to be a problem.
