So after the amazing failure of my which Fibre ISP thread, I've opted for Zen.
Now the other question, which router as my current one is a built in modem jobbie?

One which can run DD-WRT would be my suggestion - at least from what I've read.
There were a good number of suggestions when I asked (though I've yet to get around to actually choosing which one to buy...) http://forums.hexus.net/networking-b...ct-router.html - might be helpful.
TL-WR1043ND is my recommendation for price/performance.
Can be flashed with DD-WRT as well.
There are a few Buffalo routers with slightly better wifi range but they are 2-3 times the price.

Hmm, I'm more about performance of network throughput, reliability (I use a lot of RDP/SSH stuff).
DD-WRT stuff doesn't really appeal for anything other than QoS, my worry is something thats more complex is more fragile and more likely to miss the main target of reliability and performance, espesually if I'm shelling out £40 a month for my 40mbits....

Looking at the DrayTek Vigor 2830n now, looks perfect, if I find stability issues with the FTTC I'll get the second line ADSL'd up.

The software on the DrayTeks is no where near as good as DD-WRT IMO. I unfortunately work with Vigors (2820s)......I'd happily replace them all tomorrow if I was allowed. Restarting them constantly due to VPNs dropping out and just general hardware lockups.

Really? I'm not to worried about the 'features' I don't want to host files, I only want QoS, VPN, and Captive Portal. The failover functionality is a nice to have.
I kinda thought of DD-WRT as a jack of all trades device.....

Cisco?
Might as well have the right tool for the job.
Any model in particular? Its never for more than 3 users....

I use a 2820 and its fantastic, the software is a bit clunky (router reboot for a basic change etc) but once its up and running they are solid.

Yeah that is mostly what I've read online, shaithis scared me...
Still leaning that way unless anyones got some objective bad points

Draytek do the 2850 for FTTC. That probably makes more sense than using the 2830.

Hmm hadn't seen that one! Yeh would save on having to have their modem plugged in!

mm let me know how you get on with this - I am in the same boat (although I have gone for BT's fibre rather than through Zen) and I am also looking at options..I am leaning towards one of the higher spec Drayteks as their VPN support is fantastic, and having the built in modem would be a nice alternative to the Openreach one (good to get the line stats etc without hacking their modem).
2850 is probably what I would go for, although the 2750 is also an option since it still provides the built in modem + VPN support..hmm shall see.
I would just go buy a Cisco 2650 off ebay and stick in the relavent card but I can't cope with the fan noise![]()
if you can wait a couple of days, I'll let you know how I get on![]()
