well, technically it *could* provide 100mbit+ to desktop, but I doubt they'd provide anything near that.
It'd be more likely to be continent-like speeds of 8Mbit being provided though (if they don't rip us off with the costs)..

well at least BT are doing something, mite see the benefits in 30 or 40 years.

umm yes you will, you might not get fibre to the home, but they're going to put fibre to the last junction box, so all you have to worry about is the last small hop to your house, that will knock down the problems with the existing copper (and aluminium!) lines to almost nothing

This is all circumsantial anyways - with the comming of WiMAX soon (my dad works for a company called Marconi and is currently designing some of the systems ) we will see this 'lampost broadband' and WiFi hotspots much more common soon
(For people who don't know, WiMAX is a 50Km rage 250Mbps Wireless networking system )

WiMax would be okay for city centre hotspots etc, but I can hardly see it replacing the traditional "lines" for residential services.
