    Let the ranting commence....

Have a check through this forum, you'll see a number of other posts regarding VM broadband.

I have the older 20Mb service, and it is mostly stable, but recently starting getting pretty rubbish especially in the evenings between the hours you mention. This is very common.

There could be a fault on your line - it is worth visiting the VM forums (http://community.virginmedia.com/). There is some good advice in the stickies there on collected basic information from your cable modem/router, which you can then post there, just to make sure you've got the right signal levels. VM tech is likely to reply in 3 to 4 days, but there are other highly technical people there who will also answer.

If all your signal levels are correct, it is likely that your area is oversubscribed and needs the hardware upgrading, which could take a few months. You may also be experiencing traffic shaping, which kicks in during the hours you mentioned.

My ping fluctuates between 12ms and 35ms all the time.

For all I am concerned anything below 50ms is perfectly acceptable.

How is your computer connected to the router, straight Ethernet, Homeplugs, Wireless LAN?
