Connecting TV, games console(s) etc. to network

Hi, I have limited networking expertise and would appreciate any advice you can give.

I just had to replace an old telly and the new one has internet capabilities which I would like to explore (without the £56 Samsung wireless adapter if possible - http://www.currys.co.uk/gbuk/samsung...64354-pdt.html.)

I though about passthrough homeplugs for the telly but most of these only have a single ethernet socket and I would like to be able to hook up games consoles - Wii, xbox etc as well. The wiring is also extremely questionable in this house as it was split many years ago although not all of the wiring was redone properly.

Currently network consists of Linksys WAG200g gateway with wired connection to upstairs computer. There is a desktop downstairs and a couple of laptops which can connect to it wirelessly but wireless coverage is generally poor (old house with thick walls) and very weak where the telly and games consoles live.

In an ideal world I would run cables downstairs but this is simply too difficult in this house. I was looking instead at getting a newer wireless N modem/router which I gather gives better coverage and speeds to take the place of the old Linksys and setting up a separate wireless access point (bridge?) next to the telly, perhaps something like this - http://www.ebuyer.com/201376-buffalo...whr-g300nv2-eu.

This, I hope might enable me to plug the TV and consoles in via ethernet cables, and give better wireless coverage throughout the house.

I thought I might be able to reuse the Linksys as it has a bridge mode but I think it only works with wireless g so I am assuming that this will not work.

    Thanks for your help,
    TB

You could always buy a cheap switch, attach this to the consoles, etc and plug that into the homeplug, but you might be getting close to what you would pay for the wireless dongle from Samsung. Not sure, but doesn't the wireless n box also transmit in g?

For streaming media it works best with wired connections as anything that can interfere usually does and makes the streaming stutter if wireless.

Grab an access point from Scan, you can get a 4 port Edimax for about £25, then use the first port to connect into your router via homeplug if in different location and connect your other devices into the remaining ports. Then share folders on your PC with your media and your 360 / ps3 / tv etc should pick up the shared folders and away you go.

This is exactly how I have mine setup and I can stream to TV (Samsung 51" 3D Plasma which has a lan port on the back), 360, Bluray Home Cinema and also PS3 without any issues.

    Thanks for your thoughts.

The homeplug/switch option certainly sounds feasible (for the switch, I assume you mean something like this Edimax ES-3205P).

My only concern with the homeplugs is that the wiring in this place is a bit suspect, for example we recently discovered that some of the sockets next door were on our supply! That has been sorted now, we think, but the sparky had a bit of a nightmare trying to work out how the wiring was laid out and wasn't sure even when he'd finished.

I guess I would also need to check that the upstairs and downstairs weren't on different rings.

Re: Connecting TV, games console(s) etc. to network

    Thanks again.

These look like the same ones that are currently on ebuyer for £34.98 (link).

Pity they are not passthrough - we are absolutely stuffed for sockets in our house. Some of our sockets look like something the kids made with Duplo.

These passthough ones (same brand?) are £54.99 (link), amazing the difference in price. Some of the reviewers (who were probably as bored as Smudger - I thank them nonetheless) say these run particularly cool; some of the claims about hot running are a bit of a concern in an electrically challenged property like this one.

btw I have since read that is does not matter if your upstairs and downstairs are on different ring mains as long as all are supplied through the same meter.
