    Anyone on Virgin 30mb

I've got VM 10mb at the moment, and am quite happy with it, just sometimes could do with a bit faster connection. Anyone gone from 10 to 30? What are the benefits (other than speed)? Is it worth the extra fiver a month?

Edit: I currently get pretty close to 10mb/s at the mo, does the 30mb/s line get close?

    Re: Anyone on Virgin 30mb

i get full speed all the time (don't trust speedtest sites as they are abused)

you get switched to the better network, same as 50 & 100mb leaving behind the over used 20mb and below line.

ie 10mb is one up one down, 30mb is 3 down 1 up (3mb up)

also more mb's before you get capped to slow speeds during the day

the superhub now has modem only mode meaning you can use your own router instead of theres.

    Re: Anyone on Virgin 30mb

i moved earlier this year from 10mb to 30mb and was delighted

you actually get closer to 33mb, and i actually get that speed. reason being that to advertise speeds of up to something, the average connection has to be within 10% of that, so virgins real speeds these days are 10% faster than advertised for many customer

the STM limits are also increased generously, so in the evening you can download up to 5gb instead of the old 1.5gb. the 10am to 3pm theshold is 10gb, i think it was about 3gb before. thus you can make more use of your line without worrying about being STM'd. i rarely hit it these days. also if you are STM'd then your speed is about 8mb, so not that far off what you had with the old 10mb connection

upload speeds are faster too. if your area has been updated you will get 3mb upstream, otherwise it's 1mb, which i think the 10mb service was

the superhub is what mos people complain about. my only grip with it is the wifi signal isn't anwhere near as strong as my old belkin router, so doesn't go through the thick walls too well. it is wireless N instead of b/g and gigabit so those parts are better than my old router i bought myself. you can now use your own router if you prefer though

lastly, and it's just a rumour at the moment, but there is talk of all the speeds being doubled in 2012, so 30mb would be 60mb, and you'd actually get up to 66mb if you had a good connection. increasing the STM would be good if they did that too. other whispers that the 50mb would get some kind of STM when increased

it only cost me £3.50 to upgrade as i was paying full price, so it was a no brainer. i can watch all the streaming tv i want without worrying about hitting STM

Faster but you have to use the 'superhub'.

If you like resetting It equipment every few days/weeks, this is the perfect upgrade for you.

i've had mine for several months and never needed to reset it after it was installed. it works perfectly fine on a network with several devices connected via ethernet, including homeplugs carrying a signal to a second switch to support more devices in the other room. video streamers, desktops/laptops (win and osx), several consoles including new/old xboxes, playstations and wi, and my iphone

in fact, apart from the weak wifi signal it's been better than my belkin router that lasted me a good few years without any problems

i've seen plenty of people moaning about it, but i believe a combination of the latest firmware and/or using your own router and the superhub in modem mode resolves all problems

one other thing about virgin is that in all my years of having them, including at other premises, i've hardly experienced any downtime. the last time i can remember was down to a fire next to something to do with virgin that caused a knock on effect on the line, but they tend to get things up and working pretty quickly

The missus isn't going for it, even at £5 a month. How likely is it that she'll believe that they gave it to us for free?

Explain to her that meanness isn't an attractive quality in a woman.....then duck and cover

    Re: Anyone on Virgin 30mb

I'm currently on the Virgin 10mb package (fibre optic) and it suits me fine... Online gaming and video/audio streaming is flawless, but extra large downloads can take a while. I always get the advertised speed no matter what time of day .

The only gripe i have is with the crap 'media hub' they supplied (Netgear VMDG280)... The wireless signal is very poor for an 802.11n device and it doesn't seem to support mixed mode either.

it changed, you cant have mixed mode 150mb/300mb speeds any more, all router firmwares after the legisaltion passed removed this and insist on AES not TKIP

old routers without up to date firmwares (such as the old WNR854T i keep so my works PDA can still connect) can have high speed mixed mode.

as soon as you add TKIP into the mix the router reboots to 54mb/s

    Re: Anyone on Virgin 30mb

We renewed our contract in the summer when we got the Tivo, so tht's not really an option for a few months. It's not the fact that it's an extra fiver, it's 'we're already spending £90 a month and you want to spend more on a function we don't really use that much...'
To be fair, we don't do that much streaming, and with the tivo having its own 10mb line, I can't argue that we will in future...
