Problem! Ethernet connection keeps cutting out.

My ethernet connection keeps cutting out. If I disable the device and re-enable it it works so I think my router is fine. It usually happens in wot using TS.

tried reinstalling the drivers; have not found old drivers to try. Anyone have any ideas?

Probably a compatibility problem between your NIC and switch.
I have the same problem with an old IBM T40 and Draytek 2820.
Similar goes for a pair of brand new Dell Optiplex 790's and an old Genius 10/100 switch I have. The connection keeps flapping. Fixed it by connecting them to a gigabit switch instead after much unsuccessful driver and settings faffing.

    Try different NIC drivers.

Try forcing the speed and duplex.

Check your MTU size on the router config.

Re: Problem! Ethernet connection keeps cutting out.

    Okay, have ordered:-

    1) as the quickest fix I have tried the drivers directly from realtek, this was a bit late last night but I can not remember having any problems so will see if I get any probs. failing that.....

2)Will try the Duplex speed forcing but I am a noob. Will wiki MTU later! Recommendation for guide/software? EDIT: Device manager -> Network adapters -> your NIC, right click and select properties -> advanced -> speed & duplex.

    3) will dig out the netgear and replace current router (this seems the most labour intensive).

Re: Problem! Ethernet connection keeps cutting out.

It looks like the 7.048 drivers were rubbish and the 7.05 from the realtek site seem to have fixed it. I did not have one cut off last night.

I'll have a look at the speeds sometime as my internet is a bit slow but my comp does seem a little bloated.

    Thanks for the help peeps.

Re: Problem! Ethernet connection keeps cutting out.

This is a weekend problem. Sundays especially. I have adjusted my settings and forced 100mbit/s (?) and full duplex and have not had another hiccup. I have forgotten my router password so am unable to find out if it is on negotiation or a set value and cba to reset the thing.

This could be a problem if they are both on different settings, apparently I could lose data?

Will elevate to defcon3 if I get more problems.

Re: Problem! Ethernet connection keeps cutting out.

That's a funny thing. I had the same problem start yesterday. I reset my TCP stack. Still cuts every hour or so. But it's been fine today O.o

Anyone able to offer a reason?

EDIT: crap cakes! It went as I was writing this post. Talk about luck.

Re: Problem! Ethernet connection keeps cutting out.

    Set to half duplex......

    Will think about changing router.

    Ferret, you have a RealtekĀ® 8111E , 1 x Gigabit LAN Controller(s).

    I have a Realtek 8111C/D(L) chip (10/100/1000 Mbit).

Not sure if there is a coincidence. but they both use the same drivers.

Re: Problem! Ethernet connection keeps cutting out.

The 8111E chip (at least on it's own) isn't the problem.

I have multiple machines running that chip both as on-board and using some TP-Link PCI-E cards....all working flawlessly - including on some ESX installs where they have been hammered 24/7 for months.

    Update.

Router change has not fixed it. Have swopped microfilter and am awaiting next disconnection. DIdn't disconnect once last night!

glad that all seems to be okay now.

I was going to ask if you have anything else on the network that you have the same problem with?

Re: Problem! Ethernet connection keeps cutting out.

An update of my problem. Investigated further. Not a problem with ethernet. Talked to ISP. Investigated further. Incorrect configuration at exchange was causing regular packet drops (i.e. every 8 mins). Fixed now.

But now I'm suffering from a HR faulton my line.

Re: Problem! Ethernet connection keeps cutting out.

    Okay, my problem started again.

Phoned Plusnet and the man thought it was my router. Both a zyxel and a DG834 v3 where not ADSL2+ as advertised. they changed my line in december without telling me. He sent me a new router and all is fine now. Should have phoned them earlier tbh.
