    CAT6 cables?

Looking to rewire my network connection from my pc to router (about 25meters i believe, or 50... ill have to double check), the wire on my pc end has been destroyed but the cat and im not sure on its reliability now . Also sorting out a backup system via a NAS on the network and im getting fed up with the noise from my system which is caused by the HDD in there (ssd for boot and another for games etc) as they are used for storage and relatively unused really i was thinking of shoving them in the NAS aswell and simply access if from the network as it shouldnt be to much slower than normal.

So basically cat 6 1000mbit cable needed to reduce bottlenecking (router is 1gbs as its my motherboard), what do you guys recommend as the cable supplier? Cost vs quality, needs to be a reasonable price but as it wont be replaced for another 8+ years (protected from cat now...) im not to fussed on the initial outlay.

Suggestions welcomed as there seems to be many variants of cat 6...

    Re: CAT6 cables?

I take it you know the deal with Cat6, i.e. doesn't make any difference really over Cat5e for speed, much harder to run because it's less flexible, a little bit more expensive etc?

No problem with using it, I have myself because it made no difference other than a few pennies, but depending on what you're doing with it Cat5 can be a better option.

    Re: CAT6 cables?

if im honest i havent looked indepth since i last routed this house... difference then was cat 5 was internal and cat6 was more suited for outdoors but after having a brief search yesterday i was lead to belief cat 6 was where the proper 1gbit standard was enforced?. I know its less flexible, thats fine as its not going through massive loops or anything, mostly straight lines (has to go through 2 floors).

The extra cost doesnt bother me at all, it seems to be a mere quid here and there in really which isnt breaking the bank . Confusing on what the speed ratings actually effect, this 550mhz stuff baffles me on networking...

Presume something like this : http://www.ebuyer.com/268090-startec...te-n6patch75wh

    or http://www.ebuyer.com/171199-cablest...lack-20m-83414
should be exactly what im after? IIRC patch/straight cables are what i need, cross over cables are simply for router --> router and pc --> pc.

    Re: CAT6 cables?

Cat5e is much easier to handle (and you can get outdoor grade cat5e as well). If the switch or router has auto-negotiating ports, you don't need crossover cables, the port will adjust accordingly. So straight through cables will be fine!

However this article makes a reasonably convincing case for cat 6, although I think the upgrade path for cat5e may be fibre in the not too distant future. There are problems with fibre (bend radius and termination) and fibre capable equipment is more expensive, but prices will drop as fibre becomes more widespread.

    Re: CAT6 cables?

Ah so crossover is useless in this day and age , nice to know then as it means if i need to i can use a second router to extend wireless to my room at a reasonable speed!.

So cat5e can do 1gbit? seems silly to have different standards yet both do the same

    Re: CAT6 cables?

Cat5e will do 1Gb/sec. Cat 6 may be more reliable, especially over longer distances. Cat 6 has a higher bandwidth (ie, lower attenuation)

Just to add, Cat6 cable can do 10 Gigabit ethernet up to 37-55 meters, depending on environment. Cat5e is only goo for Gigabit. Gigabit sounds fine and is fine for 99.99% of home users now but in 10 years you'll likely find that it's only good enough for 99% of home users. Being in a forum dedicated to computers means the OP is more likely to be in that 1%.

You can get just over 100 Megabytes/sec over gigabit ethernet. All modern HDD's can do more than that now. With 10 Gigabit, you can push over 1 Gigabyte/sec over it. The cabling will need replacing long before a home user will be inconvenienced enough by being restricted to 1 GByte/sec.

Of course, if you want to properly future proof your cabling, you could go Cat6a and have the ability to do 10G ethernet over 100 meters and more like 40 Gbit over shorter distances.

    Re: CAT6 cables?

Yeah, you'd be fine with Cat5e. If you can, it's probably worth going for Cat6 since it's better quality cable and may serve you well in the future when networks move beyond 1Gbps, but it is less flexible and thus harder to use. If that's going to be a pain, go with Cat5e.

    Re: CAT6 cables?

Yep, you'd be okay having Cat5e. If you're able to, it truly is most likely worthy of looking for Cat6 because it truly is better quality cable television and may even last very well in the foreseeable future while sites transfer further than 1Gbps, nevertheless it is usually a lesser amount of versatile and therefore more difficult to make use of. Re: CAT6 cables?

unless you're buying 10Gb switches you're wasting your time with cat6.

    Cat5 is 100Mb, 5E is 1Gb, 5 is 10Gb.

so just put the money you'll save into better quality NICs/switch or more RAM and you'll find a nice increase there.
