Brighton BN1 Best ISP for gaming

    People of Hexus

Please help me choose a broadband provider. I live in Brighton (BN1) and I have been with Virgin Media for 4 years (Why? Because I am mentally challenged).

Even though Virgin did provide a speed of 20Mbits in my first 2 years with them; the quality of the line was always bad i.e. high latency, high jitter thus my gaming experience such as Modern Warfare and Battlefied was always 3rd world-like. So much so that people online ask me if I have dial-up

This is a common problem with Virgin Media because they oversubscribe an ageing network (ex-NTL) and they offer huge initial discounts especially to students who then proceed to download the internet as part of their academic pursuits.

Please let me know your experience, opinions relating to Gaming in Brighton specifically please as I am contemplating switching to Eclipse or Plusnet (Pro add on) or simply go with honest ADSL providers such as BE who is probably the best but can only offer 6 Mbits where I live at the moment.

I am not a heavy downloader so willing to consider even 6Mbit lines as long as someone can confirm for my peace of mind that in Brighton in 2012 in the world's 6th largest economy one can play Moder Warfare in real time without the need to regrade, upgrade then downgrade of their 18 month contract.

Pardon the sarcsam, cynicism etc but Virgin Media has that effect on people.

    Thank you all in advance

Can you get BT infinity? Might be worth looking at that. As to BE, I am with them (in Kent) and their service has been utterly reliable, I game and download, and have never had a problem.

    Thanks for the suggestion Flibb

BT's infrastructure is the basis of all FTTC providers such as TalkTalk, Eclipse, Zen and PlusNet. They all resell the BT lines which is great but they do impose different restrictions/benefits etc on their packages.

BT Infinity for example limits Peer2Peer traffic DRAMATICALLY during peak hours

Eclipse and PlusNet are meant to have gamers in mind even though you do end up paying considerably higher with both of them etc and they do have download limits (something that I feel makes them a bit more honest)

I would love to go the BE but at 6Mbits I am unwilling to pay the full price when people in more civilized areas than Brighton can actually get 20Mbits etc.

I am at a bit of a loss right now. I do not want to wait for VM indefinitely to 'fix' the Brighton area only to find myself facing the same unreliable and low quality connection.

Orange on the other hand sell me the same thing as BE but for much less money per month! very tempted indeed but have not heard reviews in the Brighton area which is notoriously bad for broadband and is the home of 12 million students plus several thousands of unemployed people that get Broadband on benefits

Come on guys Eclipse or Plusnet in Brighton? who is top dog?
